HTC Hero slowly dieing

Sorry to hijack the thread, anyone able to help me on the rooting front?

I've rooted the phone, but I need to back up the ROM, however using Terminal Emulator I get the message that their is insufficient space or it just says wrong directory when the recovery.img is in the root. (flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img)

have SU enabled, and I can't enter recovery mode :\ (probably because of this problem).

Nevermind, figured out how to do it, not enough room on the flash rom.

my HTC hero died very suddenly, i threw on the floor in frustration. Rooting is an option but £100 for an SG2 sounds good, and it will be a great upgrade

If you're using AmonRA as a recovery - just hit backup and it'll save the whole thing to your SD card. Once you have a backup you can always get back to recovery to restore the backup so there isn't any fear of completely breaking it.

I'm just getting a picture of a phone with a red triangle depicting a exclamation mark in the middle, wont get to recovery mode :|.

You did flash a recovery image, right?

I downloaded terminal emulator, did the SU, flash_image which worked, I have actually managed to get into recovery screen once but ever since then I can't get back into it.

going to try and do the same command again.

I didn't think anybody else was still using their HTC Hero. It was great when first released but now it is really showing it's age. I only have 4 more days until I can upgrade and get myself a sgs2. My hero has been factory reset numerous times, but it's just pants now haha.

Got Cyanogen mod 7 working, but no Marketplace! :O

And aye, Hero really is showing it's age now, though I'm hoping these ROMS will give me a bit more time with the device as it isn't dead yet :D.

nevermind, just flashed google apps, It's all good :D.

I'm glad you got it working!

Cheers! despite it still being slightly sluggish I'm finding it's smoother and it feels a lot better!

I'd thoroughly recommend rooting OP, Makes a whole lot of difference!

even the camera app having the touchscreen button instead of using the scrollball has made it easier!

There's certain things in the settings you can do to speed it up a little still. For example setting the keyboard pop-ups off in the keyboard settings and changing Performance Settings>CPU Settings in CMSettings to something reasonable.

Changing the launcher to LauncherPro works well for me too.

@OP Since there is still 6 months on your contract, this is definitely a good interim solution compared to spending extra money now :)

I would put the Charity ROM on, CM7 is good but bogs down the older phones, the former ran really well on my Droid1 especially OC'd to 1Ghz

Is it safe to overclock the phone to get a bit extra performance or will it punish the phone?

Sure, battery will drain a little faster but that's all really. Mine is on Smartassv2 min:264 max:614

CMod roms seem to work best on the Hero.

Mine was getting slow and have tried various roms. I had been using Villainrom 13 for a while then decided to try chronos ginger (android 2.3.4) yesterday!
Very nice indeed. I have the phone clocked to 710 and it's flying.
A very nice ui as well!
Well worth a look.
Have a look for the install on youtube. TicktockHD is the poster.
It doesn't use sense but launcher is nice!
