Thinking about buying I've second hand. It'll be unlocked but wondering if it's easy enough to flash a generic firmware to get rid of network junk and splash screens?

Any tips appreciated.

You don't flash a firmware to get rid of network junk and splash screens, what you want is a custom ROM which there usually are tons.

I'm currently using one called LeeDroid for my HTC 10 and I know he does a ROM for the HTC M9 as well http://www.leedroid.co.uk/.

A good place to go for phone stuff is xda-developers where you will find lots of ROM's and information on how to flash your ROM and upgrade firmware as well if your phone doesn't come with the latest installed.

Yes you do. Call it a ROM if you want, ROM/firmware same thing.

And no, I don't want a custom ROM. I want generic HTC firmware.... which is what I asked for.

I've used XDA developers for years, even used to cook custom ROMs for Windows mobile 10-15 years ago or so and flashed goodness knows how many custom ROMs on my Samsungs but like you say it's more for custom stuff which I don't want.

I just thought I'd post here first because it's usually quicker for a simple answer.

Thanks for your input though.

You might need to change the CID to HTC__001 so it matches the unlcoked unbranded version, but that might require S-OFF. That way it can do OTA updates normally.
