HTC One S poor mobile network signal.

Just acquired a One S on Three network and very disappointed with mobile network signal reception. Tested out 3 Network with a PAYG sim in Motorola Defy+ before signing up and signal was excellent. I now get a One S and have a signal as weak as water? Dropped connection to network and date switching. Two bars and less only where there should be 1 short of full with Defy and Three payg.

Loaded up PAYG sim from Three into Defy +. Side by side using Network Signal info app I get...

Smiley android and -87dBm ASU15 with Three PAYG and in Defy+.

HTC One S with same app and at same time I get miserable android, -104 dBm and ASU 4 on Three pay monthly contract.

I can't try PAYG Three sim in HTC One S unless I cut the sim down to micro sim size.

Anyone else got a similar issue? I'm off back to Three shop in next few days armed with my evidence  Good phone other than that which could be the deal breaker for me. If I can't resolve the matter I'll look at something else. I know Three signal is excellent and we have LOS of about 1/2 a mile to Three mast.

Same problem here but with Orange, had phone replaced and new sim arrived today but still the same. Spoken to both Orange customer services and Phones 4 u but not got far.

Will be going back to Phones 4 u tomorrow to hopefully resolve the issue.

Went back with mine to York but full signal and blazing fast connection kind of took a little explaining as to what my problem was. It's queer because I get 1 or 2 bars at home (when I know signal is reasonable). Often times it drops out and then grabs signal again. With ONE bar I can run speedtest app and get a ping of 125ms 3560down/1252up

Using Network Signal app with One S signal jumps up and down somewhat but average Net Strength is -99 dBm (ASU:7)

Put sim into my old defy+ and I get Net Strength of -85dBm (ASU: 14) Reading on Defy is 4 bars, 1 short of a full set.

BTW the Defy takes a full size sim but it is possible to place micro sim in right place over pins and under retaining clip to get the sim to work on that phone.

There are others on XDA with a similar prob.

Richy I've got the same problem as you but for the first few weeks my signal seemed fine, but this week I've noticed a no service or very low signal (x1 bar/x2 bars) when at work and when at home. Also noticing signal changes when holding handset and if you put you hands or fingers over top section of handset.

My HTC one S is only 4 weeks old and I am also on a month by month contract via Three, am awaiting on Three support via twitter at the moment but am not holding much hope out via there.

Have you taken your handset back to a Three shop yet??

Wondering if its the handset or the fact i am not on a month by month contract.
Was on a Nokia X3-02 also very month by month contract and never had signal problems, so make me belive it is the handset clearly.

I did take my original One S back for replacement. Replacement was just the same. HTC requested it back for investigation and repair - they loaded the latest software update and sent it back within the day! Could have done that myself. Made not much difference. Maybe a little less signal loss but maybe wishful thinking? Signal is so variable on this phone. At home we have a great 3UK signal and yet in the house the One S struggles to hang onto signal. Motorola Defy+ has no issues with same sim card in and has a good -78dBm signal (One S gets around -108dBm). Can't get no further interest from HTC on the subject so I'll see if a future software update becomes available to address the issue and suppose have to live with it until something else in the 4.3" size phone comes along.

Signal reception improves slightly, sometimes quite a lot if you don't hold the phone by the bottom end. Aerial is in bottom of phone I believe and to an extent a lot of phones suffer a little from the 'death grip' though maybe only marginally. There are plenty of others suffering from the same affliction of the One S around the forums. One thing I will have to try is another network simcard in my phone, say T-Mobile? Only moved to Three UK after getting a cracking signal in my Defy+. I will say though that we do have a very good signal at home from Three so doubt really it's a network issue.

I've also got the same problem on my One S, on Vodafone (purchased through Dialaphone). The only way I can hold a decent signal is to set the phone to 2G only (GSM), then it holds 2 or 3 bars solidly, but of course the data connection is dire. If I set the phone to 3G (WCDMA only or GSM / WCDMA Auto), the signal plummets to 1 bar, 0 bar or no signal. Massive shame because the phone is fantastic, it's perfect for me in every other way.

I'm going to grin and bear it for a bit and hope HTC can sort this with an OTA update, otherwise they have got a colossal problem on their hands... there are reports of signal problems on the One S in loads of forums around the world.
