HTC ONE X red flashing light

My wife's trusty old one X appears to have died on the eve of her getting a new phone. I wouldn't normally be overly fussed but she has a number of pictures on the phone which have sentimental value. (new baby)

So Q1. looking online the red flashing light appears to mean a battery fault. I have tried power button + volume key and a number of random combinations, different chargers and cables. Any ideas?

Q2. If it is dead is there anyway to get the images off?
