HTC Universal battery problems

My Uni is annoyingly switching itself off after as little as 20' talk-time or 5' wi-fi use. Yet I'm pretty sure it's NOT actually the battery because if I let it sit there for an hour or so I can then switch it back on and it'll work for as much as a day longer before needing recharging. OTOH if I try to switch it back on immediately it switches off halfway through booting up, which does suggest battery problems, and, even more suggestively, it has yet to switch off while i'm talking if it's plugged in.
So what do you think? Battery or software? Worth my while reflashing it in case it solves it, and, if yes, what's a good ROM to falsh it to? I'm on O2 (although I bought the phone from Orange). Don't want to fork out for a new battery and still have it happening, especially when I could probably get a new phone for very little more from my provider.

I have 2 of them and it sounds about right if you're using it depending on how old it is. With wifi surfing the net I'd only get a Days battery out of it at uni.

Edit: if you want I could leave one of mine on all night on wifi and see if it lasts the night, to see if i get more than 5 hours out of it.

No, it doesn't feel hot, and I used to get about a day's use out of it with wifi as well, but now it's switching itself off after as little as 20' talktime WITHOUT wifi!
I know the battery degrades over time and this is almost 2 years old, but this is extreme. Also, it's random - sometimes I can have a 20' phone conversation after it has shut itself down and I've powered it up again, so unless the battery has magically regenerated electricity (neat trick if you can pull it off) I don't see how it can really be running out of power.
