Some games work fine but more often than not game goes to load then the HMD just stays black.

I'm using a 15m active startech cable and not had as many issues since upgrading from 1070 to 1080 to

Any ideas?
 
I can't say for certain, but it seems like a good chance to suggest some rudimentary trouble shooting:

Is it the same games giving you trouble reliably? If so, use the default out of the box cables and see if you're still getting the problem.

Did you do a clean driver update?

Do you start Steam VR prior to loading the titles or not?

Have you tried the reboot option from the steam on-screen control panel.

Did you change the position socket of your USB cable when you upgraded your gfx card?
 
If that Startech cable is DP, then consider switching to HDMI. Although nVidia claimed to fix the DP issue with Pascal cards and the Vive in one of their driver updates, I still had sporadic random blackouts using a 3m DP cable. Changing to HDMI, everything just worked.
