i have on my bookshelf at the moment the following
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Head-First-...1868656?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184919802&sr=8-8
contains everything you need to know, along with XHTML, however i thought it was strange it prioritized HTML over XHTML, the book teaches you HTML all the way through, then tells you at the end about XHTML, and if you were new to HTML, i would imagine this might throw you a little. The style is pitched at novices, it contains lots of 'funny' graphics and photos, which disappointed me a little, its like something from a kids bookshelf.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/HTML-XHTML-...1868656?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184919802&sr=8-2
is what it says on the cover, a complete guide to X/HTML, its history, all its tags, and much more, extremely good reference book, not the easiest to read cover to cover, but it can be done, i have. Once this book is read there will be nothing you wont know about X/HTML
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Web-Standar...1868656?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184919834&sr=8-1
the first book does touch on some web standards, gets you coding the correct way, using the correct tags, but this book really takes you to the next level, it is SO easy to read, i was completely addicted to this book, even sneaking off from the shop floor whilst in work to read it at the back of the stock room, the best book i own, taught me so much, highly recommended.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/CSS-Mastery...1868656?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184919823&sr=8-1
another fantastic book, takes what you would have learned in the first and third book to the very top level, improves on a few of the techniques in the web standards book, and will as the title says, turn you into a CSS master
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Homepage-Us...1868656?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184919872&sr=8-1
not to do with HTML and CSS, but a very useful book anyway. Analyzes 50 websites, taking a look at logo placement, navigation style, wording, layout and creating statistics for the lot, giving you a better understanding of the way your web pages should look in order to make them more user-friendly and functional
I am no book reviewer, you might be able to tell, but all the books above are highly recommended, but id advise you check out some of the interviews on amazon first, they will be a lot better
