HTML formatting input box

As the title is probably quite confusing, you'll see I've been having trouble searching for what I want to achieve.

I want a text input box with the formatting options, such as bold and italic, and so that when it gets saved to my DB, the html code for the formatting is present.

Any ideas what they're called? Is there a way to do it, or do I have to use a third party chunk of code? I can't even find an example now that I want one

EDIT: talk about staring me in the face, like the input box when you post on here...

And for future reference, what is their official title?

"Rich Text Editor" is what you'll usually find them listed under.
