ok, my master plan of chucking a HTPC on my dad's TV downstairs is going to be done soon. but the thing which is holding me back is the software which will be running the HTPC. since my dad is no techie i want to make the interface as simple as possible, something which just shows a movie/tv/music title and will play it.

heres where its getting complicated, the media is stored on a fileserver elsewhere in the house. this is to reduce noise on the HTPC and also allow other computers to connect to it. so i need to find something which will also allow the streaming of media over a network.

preferably i would like something opensource. i was thinking of just chucking Xubuntu and Samba on the fileserver, but i dont know if this allows for streaming of media. but my main problem is finding something which will run the HTPC.

suggestions please :D

Second XBMC, fantastic program. Will allow you to stream over samba, nfs etc and a multitude of other things.

Edit: Also install the mediastream skin, by far my favourite :D

XBMC will work great. You don't even need to have mediatomb.

Just set up samba shares or an nfs mount and let it scan that. Works a treat :)
