so ive just bought one of the LG BR/HD-DVD readers and installed it into my WMC 2005 box:

E2200 Conroe Core 2 2.20GHz
ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 R2.0
2Gb DDR PC3200
ASUS ATi 3650HD AGP

now the ATi is rated for BR, it has VC1 and H264 hardware decoding support etc. however bunging transformers BR in the drive with powerdvd7 it fails to run at all and suggests running BR Advisor. within arcsoft total media it loads the main languages screen but once you hit the UK option it fails to go any further.

running cyberlinks BR advisor and performing a test, under advanced playback results there are red traffic lights against VC1 and H264. if you click the link through to the cyberlink suggestions page it states the recommended graphics card of which the 3650 is listed.

any bright ideas? have i missed something blindingly obvious?

Could it be an HDCP issue?

How about drivers? There's been talk of newer ATi drivers messing up the HDCP check.

i am running the htpc with a dvi connected monitor at the mo rather than a HDMI tv while i test it, that wouldnt make a difference would it? or would it?

htpc and HD newb alert..

re drivers - i am running the bogo ones off the supplied cd but looking at the asus site the drivers on there are on older version number??!

it will if that monitor doesnt support hdcp over dvi. you'll need to use anydvdHD to remove the HDCP encryption for it to play. either that or connect it over vga.

right so basically either hook it up via the vga or plug the HDMI into the tv..

okay, ill give it a whirlyo ta :)

right so a little progress..

hooked up to the TV via HDMI, all the HD modes now show up in the ati catalyst avio panel. arcsoft still only goes as far as the language selection.

powerdvd now plays about 10 seconds of each chapter before throwing up a HDCP error and says to run BR advisor.

im thinking dodgy HDMI cable? any other ideas?

Make sure you get the firmware update for your drive from LG. I know there was one pushed out not that long ago. Also, PowereDVD has an update specifically for your drive too. Check there also.

im pretty sure i saw the autoupdater download one last week, how can i check the firmware version? ive also applied the updates for powerdvd7, but is there a different specific patch?

As mentioned above. Get AnyDVD and run it in background. It'll remove any HDCP encryption. Also allows you to play region locked discs, which is nice.

Don't buy AnyDVD just to remove HDCP for playback as there shouldn't be any need. There aren't really many blu-rays that are region locked either.

Buy it if you want to rip your blu-rays though.

so any suggestions then? not sure about installing extra software when it should work with what i have already?

well anydvd solved it, might have to buy a copy while its still being offered with free lifetime updates..

liking BD quality, tested with transformers and even on my older pioneer plasma its lovely :)
