Hi Folks,

Looking for an HTPC build for the girlfriend.

Will be playing 1080p MKV's and some light gaming.

So far I've got:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Sapphire Radeon R9 270X Boost OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Card £131.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97N-WIFI Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Mini ITX Motherboard £101.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £63.98
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G1600HC9DC01) £55.99
1 x Intel Pentium K Anniversary G3258 Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £52.99
1 x Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced Mini-ITX Case - Black £39.95
1 x SuperFlower Amazon 450W "80 Plus Bronze" Power Supply £32.99
1 x Alpenföhn Panorama CPU Cooler £19.99
Total : £509.47 (includes shipping : £8.00).

She wants a reasonably small form factor, and she has win 7 and a large external HDD.

Any suggestions?

Cheers.

Edit: Pentium K chosen cos I want to play around with it :)

Hi MiSJAH,

Noticed that the total height of the CPU cooler + fan is 66mm. And the CPU cooler clearance for that case is 65mm. Looks like it might be a tight fit.

Cheers. :)

The CoolerMaster Elite 130 Mini-ITX will cool better. Mesh exterior for front fan. Not sure if it's necessary paying extra for it, though.

And since you have a "Z" motherboard, you can go for faster RAM if you want? There's a 2400MHz version of that Vulcan Orange for the same price as the 1600MHz.

if you drop the mitx requirements...

YOUR BASKET
1 x Sapphire Radeon R9 270X Boost OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Card £131.99

1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G2400HC11CDC01) £55.99

Total : £514.48 (includes shipping : £8.00).

core i5 build
256gb ssd
8gb of faster ram for the same price (not that the board can use the extra speed, but because it's more for your money)
thrown in an optical drive
size-wise, the case is about 1/3 bigger than the cm 120/130

White/purple eye-candy for the lady? :)

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 750Ti OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (N750Ti-2GD5/OC) £103.99
1 x MSI Z97I AC Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Mini ITX Motherboard £89.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £67.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Fury White 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-14900C10 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX318C10FWK2/8) £64.99
1 x Intel Pentium K Anniversary G3258 Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £52.99
1 x Silverstone Strider SST-ST30SF SFX Series - 300 Watt £37.99
1 x Silverstone SST-SG05W-Lite Sugo USB 3.0 - White £34.99
1 x Prolimatech Samuel 17 CPU Cooler £34.99
1 x Corsair Air Series AF120 1500RPM LED Purple Quiet Edition (CO-9050015-PLED) £8.99
Total : £506.52 (includes shipping : £8.00).

The purple Corsair fan would go at the front, and the white Silverstone fan gets mounted on the Prolimatech heatsink.

If she is seeking max performance for the money, then Tamzzy's i5 spec is pretty much unbeatable. And yours with the 270X is a more powerful Z97 mini-ITX spec too.

For light gaming, the 750Ti should do the business, though.
