Hi guys,

First time in building a HTPC so I'm pretty unsure what I'm doing.

I've put something together and I'd just like a few more opinions to make sure I've not made any silly mistakes.

It's going to be connected to a yamaha rxv367 AV receiver. Would this be adequate for 1080p movies / blurays (I know I need to add a bluray drive to the build but I can add that in later).

Also, will this output audio and video over the HDMI output on the motherboard?

Many Thanks,

Marc

Thanks for clearing up the HDMI question mate.

As for the hard drive, are these 6GB/S ones not worth going for then? I've never really paid much attention to hard drives, as long as they store my files, I've generally been happy with them :)

Any other changes you could recommend?

Thanks again,

Marc

Ah right, I see.

I did read the review on the case and noticed about the PSU and the fans. I've added three fans to the build as the guy recommened in the review. I think I will probably replace the PSU at some point if I go ahead with it but it should last me for a little bit :).

Would this be a pretty adequate HTPC build?

Thanks for all your help,

Marc

Cheers for the replies guys.

I am a bit wary of that power suply. I guess my max budget is about £350.

Yeah, I found some ultra quiet ones for a couple of quid so they should do.

Cheers,

Marc

I think if I go for my original build I will add the PSU you suggested Stulid. It's not worth risking expensive equipment for £30.

Andi, that motherboard / cpu combo board looks pretty good, it would save me a little bit of cash as well.

I'm not sure where I'm heading with this build though. Maybe I'm building a bit overkill for my needs?

Cheers,

Just under £400 now

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the replies and help on the subject.

I've decided against getting such a beasty rig. I'm going to try and build a budget HTPC with enough grunt for my movies / music.

I've decided to go with:

*Samsung F1 1TB
*OCUK Opera Case
*ATI 5350

Now I just need to decide on a nice little motherboard / ram / cpu bundle. I'm thinking about the Phenom II X2 550 BE.

Any suggestions on the few things I need above?

Many Thanks,

Marc

Hi Stulid,

Is there any point in me buying a chip with iGPU when I've just purchased a 5350? (Genuine question, but however it's phrased it sounds, what's the word..arrogant)

I was thinking about an AMD Phenom II 550 or something along those lines?

Cheers,

Marc

Do you think I'd be better off going with that build then?

I mean, I could probably pick up a Phenom / Mobo / RAM combo for about £110 second hand.

Do you think this would be a better buy? I'm willing to put my faith and hard earned cash in your wisdom :)

Cheers,

Marc

I've gone with your suggestion Stulid!

Hopefully this will be a nice little HTPC for me.

Total cost - £280 - Not too bad :)

Thanks for all your help,

Cheers,

Marc

Cool stuff.

Also with having a built in GPU present, if say your graphics card turned faulty? you can still use the PC:)

Do you think it would still be worth using my 5350 in this rig to take load off the CPU or just sell it?

Cheers,

Marc

I'm not too sure what you're trying to point out there Stulid. Is it the fact that the MSI can put out HDMI 1.4 but the 5450 can't?

I thought HDMI 1.4 was only needed for 3D stuff?

Cheers

I think you guys were right about that case being dire, jesus, it's awful.

The button fell off, the plastic sticks that hold the front on have snapped off and it doesn't line up.

I know it was a cheap case but that's just shocking workman ship. I'm surprised OCUK even put their name on it to be honest.

*looks for another case*
