Hello there, my amplifier is 171 mm (H): 435 mm (W): 393 mm (D) and I am looking for a HTPC case which is a similar width and depth to fit in an AV rack I am going to make in a space in the lounge.

The catch is that I am looking to use existing hardware and the hardware is rather large, as this will be used for gaming as well.

Existing case and hardware:

Cooler Master

ATX
Micro ATX

1 x Headphone
1 x Mic In
2 x USB 2.0
1 x eSata
1 x IEEE 1394
Drive Bays:
5 x 3.5" Internal
2 x 5.25" External
Expansion Slots:
7
Fan Bays:
5 x 120mm
2 x 140mm
Window:
Yes
Power Supply Form Factor:
ATX
CPU Cooler Dimensions:
"Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus (Socket 1155)
79.7 x 158.5 x 120 mm (WxHxD mm)"
VGA Card Length:
"MSI ATI Radeon HD 6950 OC Twin FrozR III Power Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express
116 x 39 x 270 mm (WxHxD mm) Double slot"
Dimensions:
213 x 482 x 525 mm (WxHxD mm)
Colour:
Black

What cases have space for two optical drives, a card reader on the front, which might accept the CPU cooler whilst accommodating all the other hardware?

Thank you for your reply. If I am going to be changing my CPU cooler then that opens up several possibilities (excluding a card reader on the front, which can be substituted with an external option neatly to the side).

It is important to me that it has two optical drives, so I think it comes down to the following (based on a search on Overclockers UK).

  • Lian Li PC-C60B HTPC Case - Black Lian Li PC-C60B HTPC Case - Black £166.99 - Dimensions: 445mm(W) x 182mm(H) x 410mm(D)
  • Silverstone Grandia GD08 Home Theatre Server Case - Black (SST-GD08B USB 3.0) £105.95 - Dimensions: 440mm(W) x 175mm(H) x 425mm(D)
  • Silverstone LaScala LC17 Rackmount HTPC Case - Black (SST-LC17-B USB 3.0) £84.95 - Dimensions: 425mm(W) x 170mm(H) x 425mm(D)

If I have missed any other candidates, you have any thoughts or have noticed anything I have missed which would preclude one of those I have listed above then please let me know.

For the record, I have TWO LC17's & have owned both for 5 & 3 years respectively :D.
Being an older design, they have smaller fans, 2 X 80mm included, which are quite noisy.

I replaced them with these.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Silverstone USB 3.0 Card Reader - Black/Silver (SST-FP37) £22.99
1 x Arctic F8 PWM Case Fan - 80mm £2.99
Total : £29.89 (includes shipping : £3.26 Ex.VAT).

You can install 92mm Fans in the HD cages, you may have to remove one of said cages (the middle one) to get the Graphics card in.

Fitting 2 optical drives in this case is fiddly & the CPU cooler gets in the way.

you can fit a card reader (see above) to replace the front USB ports too.

So do you think that Silverstone LaScala LC17 Rackmount is a good option for me based on my requirements?

It's one of the cheapest. It may not be the most suitable though as it is an old design. Silverstone have improved the design of their HTPC cases as time has gone by (bigger & quieter fans being one of the improvements)

A bit more expensive choice of CPU coolers that will fit in that case:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Noctua NH-D9DX i4 3U CPU Cooler - 92mm £47.99
1 x Noctua NH-U9B SE2 CPU Cooler £44.99
1 x Noctua NH-D9L CPU Cooler - 92mm £44.99
Total : £137.96 (includes shipping : Ex.VAT).

the bottom one is the one I use. Not cheap, but it is very quiet.

Thank you for your reply. If they have designed newer cases, which may be more suitable, which ones?

I had a quick look and realised there are more possibilities if I go for an external multi-card reader.

What do you think of the Silverstone Grandia GD08 Home Theatre Server Case - Black (SST-GD08B USB 3.0)? Would that be a candicate? Are there any others you think are more suitable?
