Just wondering do you need a 780 or similar for a htpc if you are connecting to a AVR?
What advantages come with a top spec card if I was only using it for streaming/browsing?

None. It would be wasted if all you will be using the HTPC for is streaming/browsing.

A cheap, even fanless card will do the job.

If you have NO intention of gaming on the thing at all just stick with AMD or Intel Intergrated, they are both more than upto the task.

So it will make no difference to picture quality when streaming 1080p to led tv? Also will the AVR upscale content coming from pc?

Quality difference will be so small that it would be unnoticeable, if any difference at all.

Can't comment on inputting to a receiver that outputs to a TV with regards to upscaling though.

I use a Asus NVIDIA GT 610 Silent/Low Profile gfx card in my HTPC and it has coped with all the 1080p videos I've chucked at it :-)
Can be had for as little as £28
