Right chaps,
I am hoping someone will be able to assist me. All this HD stuff is all a bit new to me!

This weekend I am picking up my nice new Pioneer PDP436XDE Plasma. :D
I am hoping to connect a PC to the VGA socket. Is there anything I need to do with the Graphics card on the PC to look the dogs doodars?
PC Spec is.. p4 2.4 /1GB/200GB/ATI 9800seAIW / WIN XP

What I predominantly looking for is the ability to get the best possible image. Do I need any other software? dvd software? scaler? tweakers?

As I said, bit of a numpty when it comes to this.. I am hoping I can just plug it all in and HEY presto.
I am looking to upgrade my standalone DVD player in the next few months, or will the PC be as good/better?

Pretty much PnP, you will want to set the res to the native res of the screen, apart from that there isn't much to do.

FFDShow is a good piece of software for sorting out quality and sharpening everything up you can run it with WMP or Theatretek or Zoom Player.

The latest version of Theatertek only supports NVidia 6/7 series cards if you where not to use FFDShow... check out there site for more info.
