Im getting annoyed with running my big, hot, incredibly noisy Dell piece of junk just for media reasons so i'm going to build a tiny HTPC/light gaming rig.

Here are the components that I plan to use:

Fractal Design Array R2: R2 standing for revision 2, the major improvements is that it will be available without the 300W PSU and has 2 expansion slots. This case is due out in the next few weeks, this is what i'll be waiting the longest for :(
It's a m-ITX case and has space for upto 6HDDs + 1SSD (more on that below...)

The best PSU you can get to fit in the is a 350W Be Quiet! one. So one of those is on the way.

Mobo is to be a Gigabyte GA-H55N-USB3

CPU, is a i5 650. Why dual not the quad 750? The 650 uses less Watts and kicks out less heat for pretty much the exact same performance.

CPU cooling might be a slight issue, due to the size of the case and the PSU being right above the CPU a low height cooler is required. This will be satisfied by a Scythe Shuriken BIG. This might cause problems for the GPU as shown below, the Shuriken is big, it makes up for its lack of height by being 120mmx120mm. There is a chance that this will impede of the PCI-e slot.

RAM will just be some 2x2GB DDR3 Dual Channel. Probably some OCZ Gold.

GPU is going to be a Sapphire 5750 Vapor-X 1GB. I would like to have gone bigger, but the PSU is the limiting factor for everything.

The clever ones amongst you will have noted that the case is only meant to take half height GPUs, due to the HDD drive that crosses the whole width of the case. Some modding will therefore be required.
This is how the HDD cage sits in, with the PSU in place. As you can see the right hand side is blocking where a full length card will go. (this is a R1, note the single expansion slot)

So i'll pop the rivots in the top right, cut along the dotted lines, then move the end piece over, rivot the top again and join the bottom up. (not sure yet whether ill just use tape or weld it)

This will allow for the full height card and still keep 4 HDD bays.

:D

You'll also need to cut out the chassis because that card is a dual slot version.

Project does sound good though. Lets us know more. Subscribed.

Subscribed, I'm just in the process of rejigging my old HTPC/FreeNAS box so be interested to see how this pans out. I'm really holding on for the Da Box 100 mITX case as I'm constrained by space, but will probably end up using the old Antec Fusion as a stop gap until it gets released.

How confident are you that the 350w PSU will be enough for the 5750? Reason I ask is that I've got a 350w PSU and I've just bought a 5770 off the MM, so if I can get away without upgrading that would be superb but I have a feeling it might be a bit underpowered...

I thought the 5770 was pushing it a little bit too much, especially since i want the Vapor-X version which takes a few extra Watts.

Hopefully if m-ITX really takes off then we will start seeing some more development in smaller sized PSUs. The Be Quiet! one is the only one available from a reputable brand.

Yeah I had a feeling that was going to be the case, fortunately the Fusion or the DB100 take a full ATX PSU so should have a bit of wangle on what I can get to suit.

There are a couple of folk around on various boards using Dell 350w PSUs to run 5770s (lol), so hopefully my trusty Antec one will hold up for a bit at least.

Why the Fractal Design Array R2 over the Lian-Li Q08?
-edit
will that cooler interfer with the memory slots?

I thought about the Q08 for a long time. in the end i decided that i didnt like the overall look of the Q08, like fan on show in the front. Im a fan of things looking very simple.

Cooler should be fine with the memory slots, it will go over them by a few mm. I'm more worried about it blocking the PCI-e.

Not so...

I have both the 350W Be Quiet & the 450W Silverstone. The Silverstone is much better in every way compared to the Be Quiet!. ;)

The silverstone has a single 36A rail, as opposed to 16A & 14A rails with the Be Quiet!

Also you get the additional connectors with the Silverstone and it just looks nicer IMHO.

Only problem is you'll have to source one elsewhere.

Is that silverstone modular?

Sorry for the slow progress, heres a quick update.
Mainly just waiting the case to be released at the end of this week. Should start building next week some time.

Im changing the mobo to a DFI P55 m-ITX, due to the poor CPU placement on the Gigabyte. Changing the GPU to a 5770 HAWK from the Vapor, not much difference but from what i understand the HAWK is slightly quieter.

I've been told that the case will overheat very easily with any GPU in it. So to help im changing the front fan to a Noiseblocker BlackSilentPRO PK3 which is 90CFM compared to the stock 39CFM. Also i'm prepared to CNC some more holes down the left hand side and add a 120mm Scythe Slim, i'll see how the temps go before i start doing any serious damage to it.

Stay tuned.
