Htpc+ Main rig build Check

That is the basket^
Basically I am swapping some stuff around, putting some new stuff in my main rig and taking the old stuff and putting it into a htpc.

Main rig build:
Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail
Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Triple Channel
His 1gb 6870
1.5tb secondary storage
500gb Os storage
700w OCZ Modular
Cooler master scout
HTPC BUILD:
Intel core 2 quad q8300 (overkill but free)
Asus p5n73-am
4 GB ddr 2
Samsung SpinPoint F4 EcoGreen 2TB
LG CH10LS20 10x BluRay-ROM / 16x DVD±RW Drive - Black (Retail)
Win TV nova HD S2 ( I wish overclockers stocked this)
Antec 300.


The 700w power supply is the same price as the 600w, also have gone for a modular power supply because it is just so much easier to build with and I like OCZ, Antec 300 because I need it to be quiet and it has tricool and it is cheap and cheerful. Looks do not matter because it will be behind the TV.

The 950 because 1366 is going to be future proof for quite a while, and it packs a good punch.
That motherboard because it has good reviews, Sata 3 and it is 1336 of course.

Also going to be using a few denon speakers+ amps for the surround sound and yes the motherboard that I will be using supports Surround Sound.

Please tell me what you think and there is anything else better instead.

January 9th is the Sandybridge release date.

Wait to see how that affects current market prices, and ofc how it performs and its price. Might pick up a bargain etc as prices are dumped down, or as soeone flogs stuff on MM because they need the latest and greatest.

Wait to see how that affects current market prices, and ofc how it performs and its price. Might pick up a bargain etc as prices are dumped down, or as soeone flogs stuff on MM because they need the latest and greatest.

Yeh but I doubt anything high end will come out for a while, just like what Amd did. A massive hype up for the 6k series and not anything top end for a few months.

You're right, its only the SB mainstream getting released 9th Jan, the high end stuff isnt till Q3/Q4 so if you have a need for a proper i7 system there is no point in waiting
However whether or not you need the i7 is another matter, what use is your main rig used for?

You're right, and this isnt aimed at you mate, but Im also by the same token fed up of seeing everyone automatically say wait, even when the OP has a budget far too low to consider SB or has high end needs that SB wont be able to meet, SB is not the coming of the Messiah as some seem to make out
I personally doubt prices will be driven down for quite a while, but that is pure speculation so hey ho

I do a fair bit of gaming, programming and a few other cpu intensive tasks and even more so when I get my HTPC as I will need a good encoding set up for shrinking the sizes (semi-legal).
Also I just want a decent motherboard as well this current one has been playing up with my graphics card (I am putting my old graphics card in the HTPC,so there should not be any problems). The only thing I am a bit worried is that my old graphics card is alright, I had it stored in a airtight container knowing that I would be doing this build so it should be alright.

I don't think it is coming of Messiah by any means. I'm not going to bother with it. Just makes sense to me, see how it affects prices (if at all, as you've speculated). Similarly, I didn't know about different release dates, I thought it was all coming out
