A question which probbaly has a million answers but I'm looking for anything obvious but not too obvious.

Mate has bought bits of a PC from ocuk to make a htpc which is roughly the follow

Phenom Quad Core 9600+
Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H AMD 780G
Antec Fusion Case
2 x 1GB OCZ Platinum XTC (rev 2)
1 x 1TB
1 x 500Gb
LG Bluray rewriter

Now he's phoned me up and says it doesn't start - well the fans flick on (turn about 15º) and that's it no other lights, beeps or anything.

He says he checked all connections and it seems OK. Now I've asked him to reset CMOS but that's had no effect and that's all he [can] tell me. I'll have a look at it this evening when he brings it over but I just wanted ocukers opinion if there's anything (not so)obvious that I may miss in looking at it (incompatability, BIOS?) etc...

Thanks in advance

The first thing, beyond basic checks to be sure everything is plugged in and well-seated, is the RAM. If possible take it out and test it in another rig. Swap slots on the mobo and see if it makes any difference.

Is the CPU power connector in, i had that problem because i rebuilt it and forgot the most obvious thing, silly me.
To me sounds like something just inst plugged into the motherboard.

Well did I did ask him about the 4 pin square power before posting and eventaully he said oh yes that yellow and black one, I'll plug it in but it's not made any differance (apparently)

You mirror what I think but I can't say without seeing it though

I did actually say to him I'll probably take one look twiddle summat and hey presto. (which'll leave him well annoyed)

Well it was simple really - there was a three pin power plug from the main 24pin which looks 'reasonably' like a fan plug so he plugged it in the 'sysfan' header hence creating a short and not powering up - I do wonder what this three pin plug was for though.

Strange, does it have a single cable cable comming out of it, usually thats used for monitoring the PSU fan speed.

Rob

What PSU did he have.

The 3 pin cable is used for powering the VFD. If you look underneath the DVD drive bay there will be a cable with a connector for it. :)
