Im getting really fed up with our htpc setup. Im starting to think there is a gremlin hanging about causing problems to happen:

The first htpc was a shuttle sn45g, radeon 9600se all in wonder and audigy. It worked fine for 4years and then suddenly the video card started to kick off, not loading up properly and needing multiple reboots to get it working right. Also the sound would cut out for no reason. Everything on google suggested the card was kaput. So threw in the towel and took the opportunity to build a new machine.

The second htpc built around an asrock s775 board, antec nsk1300 and the same radeon 9600se all in wonder and audigy from the shuttle. It works for 6months no problem and then the video problem comes back along with cutting out of the sound? I slog it out for some time and finally get sick of it and sourced two unused radeon 9600xt all in wonders from america.
Put one card into storage and used the other for the htpc, the problem is resolved and I sit back happy knowing its working again. this was 3months ago and as of today the problem is starting to come back again, tonight the sound cut out and the recording was wasted. Tomorrow I suspect the video card will not boot correctly and will need multiple restarts to get it settled and working.

I cant bloomin suss out whats going on here? If it was one pc then I would say ok fair enougth the pc was faulty but both machines are doing this. The 9600se is completely ok as I fitted the card into a spare machine where it works 100%, I suspect the 9600xt is ok aswell!

Given that history I'd suggest localised overheating and or poor electrical contact. Household dust and grease accumulates on parts increasing heat. Contacts move under thermal stress or oxidise. Removing, cleaning and resetting parts often helps (which may explain why the cards seem ok i another computer the contacts are partly cleaned by removal and insertion).

Auto updates of software are another bane for working systems.

You can do much better than that card for recordings partculalry with digital TV conversion underway

Im fed up with it all tbh. I feel like buying a proper recorder of some kind that allows me to move recordings at a later date, edit them etc.

I know the ati cards I have are old but when they work they do a great job.
