This is slowly driving me mad, I can't figure out why my HTPC wont post.
The backstory is as follows;
I built an HTPC from spare parts with the following spec:
Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R (originally an Abit but that gave up the ghost after a few months)
Intel E6300
ATi 3870HD
4x 1gb crucial ddr2 5300
sata hd/sata dvd/ corsair psu

Worked fine till one day it stopped posting. So I did all the usuals like only plugging in the minium components and testing all the components (apart from the CPU and MoBo) separately, all working fine. The board would power up and everything would spin up to full speed but nothing would happen.
Concluded that it must be the Mobo or CPU. I found a new (second hand) MoBo at a reasonable price so bought that as i was cheaper than a new CPU. The board in question is a Asus P5k premium WiFi-AP edition.
I rebuild everything and again everything would spin up to full speed with nothing.
Checked all the components independently again (apart fromt the MoBo and CPU, I was using a Thermaltake Golden Orb II which is a bugger to take off) all working fine again. I assumed that the CPU was gone, I got fed up and left it.
A few months pass and I had christmas money burning a hole in my pocket so I decide to buy a new CPU, namely a Intel E3400. Installed it today and the bugger still wont post. Except this time it didn't spin everything up to full speed. I tried plugging only the minium again with no effect, I then tried ram i knew worked from another computer and now it has started spinning everything up at full speed again.
Its driving me mad can't think whats causing it, all the components work independently and I can't find anything that might be causing it it to short out. All I can think is that the Asus board is also buggered, which will be very annoying as its now to late to return it.

Can anyone else think of any reason I might have not thought of why its bit posting? or are we thinking that the board is dead?

Cheers,

Jack

I do confess to skimming through your post, but I didn't notice you mentioned nothing of swapping the PSU?

This sounds like the case to me if it's not posting. No post beeps?

What graphics card did you use in place of the 3870 when testing? Has the board in question got onboard graphics?

When you say you tried it with minimum components and "all working fine" what do you mean by that? It booted up or the fans just started spinning etc?

Make sure both atx connectors are hooked up to the board, 4-pin for the cpu is sometimes easy to forget.

I tried the 3870 (all well as the ram etc) in two different computers and they worked, in fact I lent the card to a friend for most of last week and he had no problems.
Minium components means just the cpu, 3870 and one stick of ram (one of the orignal sticks and a stick I took from a working pc) and when that didn't work no ram. when I said before it all spins up to full speed i meant the fans were running at 100%, the first time I tried the were running as normal (but with anything appearing on screen) but ten when I tried with different ram it went back no all the fans spinning up to 100% again.

Checked all the connectors they're fine, the psu is pretty new, has only been used for about 3 months.

sorry for the confusion. hope that helps
