can anyone advise a good remote to use with a htpc.

budget around £60, dont mind if it dont have lcd. qwerty keyboard would be good.

looking for all round compatibility as a swap and change htpc OS quiet a lot

also is it better to get a case integrated with infa red, or just use a usb adaptor instead ?

Best bet might be using a Logitech Harmony with some sort of USB IR receiver if that's possible.

I'm using the Microsoft MCE remote, but they're rare/discontinued now. It's a great product if you can find one though.

As a side note, what software can these remotes be used with? Is it a case of whether the software supports remote controls or do you map the buttons to controls?

the hauppauge mce kit is pretty good if you can find one. Pretty much the same as the microsoft one. Either work pretty well too.

and fully supported by linux media centers as well as windows, if you ever plan to use that

would depend first on the os you plan to use, and what software you want to use on it.

the proper mce remotes generally work on most things.
i would avoid the non offical microsoft/hauppauge ones thou, as they tend to be less compatable.

i've used them fine on Mythbuntu, so should work well on any linux distro running MythTV
