HTPC resolution setup

Hi All,

I have recently built an HTPC system to use primarily for .mkv files and BluRay. I use PowerDVD 9 for BluRay and VLC Player for the mkv files. The HTPC is displayed on a Panasonic Plasma (P42V20). I would like to know if there is an optimum way to set up the display properties to ensure smooth playback of both files. At the moment I generally set the PC to 60Hz 1080p and the TV will detect it fine but in order to use the TVs 24p facility I need to set the refresh rate in ATi Catalyst to 24Hz manually - the TV will then detect the PC as if it's a BluRay player. Presumably in a dedicated BluRay player the output resolution is set according to the media on the disk whereas with an HTPC it is set by the graphics card and there is no way to alter the resolution automatically depending on the content of a particular disk or file.

System Spec:
Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB RAM
ATi Radeon 5570
Samsung BluRay drive

The sound and graphics are from the ATi's HDMI port, in future I plan to run these through an Onkyo AMP though I doubt this makes any difference unless the amp decides to upscale content up to 1080i.

To be honest both settings appear to run fine with minimal stuttering and 24p is pretty similar to Panasonic's Intelligent Frame Creation (which I can use in the 60Hz mode). Both produce smoother panning shots but on the downside they make film appear a bit like it's shot on a cameracorder. If anyone has tweaked a similar setup and got good results or has any advice please let me know.
