I was thinking yesterday, my family want a way to watch anything they like on the TV downstairs. But i would like to take it a bit further.

I wasn't too sure on this, but i wanted to set up a SFF able to play movies in 1080p from saved movies, or from streaming.

I would also like to be able to share and save files to it from any computer on my network. But since i've never done anything like this before, im not sure on the best route.

Im not too sure on OS, all the other computers run Windows 7. But i was thinking of using Ubuntu, with FreeNas and XBMC instead of a windows install, hopefully to reduce the amount of power??. Once again i have no much experience on this side of things, is this a good way to go? I've never used anything linux based, so would the drivers be fine?

For the setup at least, i was thinking along the trinity line. Something like this perhaps? Or intel and GPU?

YOUR BASKET
1 x ASRock FM2A75M-ITX AMD A75 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Mini ITX Motherboard £73.99
1 x AMD A6-5400K Black Edition 3.60GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Dual Core Processor (AD540KOKHJBOX) £49.99
1 x Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced Mini-ITX Case - Black £37.98
Total : £173.36 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Ive got 2x4gb of 1333mhz ram i can stick in. But i will also need a PSU, I have got one, but i would want a almost silent, trustworthy one since it is a NAS it will be on 24/7 pretty much.

My only other concern is temps, since it will be next to the TV i would want it to be silent, so would using the stock heatsink be a ok idea? or will it be noisy. And will the specs i've thought of even run 1080p well? The case can take 3 Hard drives. so Ill probably end up getting 4TB. But once again, which is the best RAID to go for?

I'd say my max budget is around £200 but would like to spend less, so if anyone could shed some light, i would be eternally grateful.

Sorry for all the questions, but if anyone could give some feedback I would very must cherish it.

I ran an Athlon 235e next to my main rig for 12 months on a Freezer 7 heatsink with no fan, never had an issue with temps even in the height of the summer.

As for OS etc. Just use windows 7 and xmbc

Nice, cheers for that. Guess windows is the way to go. My main concern, will the a6 and the onboard graphics do a decent 1080p?

Just to add regarding the A6 I own the same chip and I confirm not only will it do 1080p at a canter the image quality is outstanding.

Nice, cheers!

HP Microserver, plus a low profile PCI-e card?

Would that give a better price/performance ratio than the one i specked? I know you get cashback now, but would it not be throttled by the other components?

Cheers for the suggestion btw.

Nope, XBMC will offload the video to the GPU so the CPU isn't important.
