Hello my fellow Overclockers.

I would like to build a combination of HTPC and Server(NAS?). Problem is, i dont have any experience in servers and software. I'd like to get some help in building this project.

I would like:
- automatic backup from my PC and Laptop
- Online File acces
- HTPC functionalities, (remote control, HDMI and TV recorder)
- Being able to run a server (for games n stuff)
- Specific file sync (so that some files are synced between my laptop, comp and backup. and some other files automatically get removed from my laptop and synced to my pc and server)

What kind of software and hardware can i use so that i have a sleek HTPC layout when i wanna watch a movie, but full server/backup functionalities when i acces the HTPC from my pc/laptop.

greetings Dragonhaertt

Hey,
Looking over your needs, and presuming that your pc and laptop are running windows, it sounds like a job for Windows Home Server 2011. details here

That will handle all the server based activities. backups / media storage.

Whenn you say you want htpc functionality, do you actually want to watch video's etc on it or stream them from it?
Either way programs like mediaportal and xbmc are probably going to be the easiest to get into.

As far as recording tv goes, you'll need a tv tuner card as part of your hardware spec.

Do you have a budget for the hardware?

hey,
with HTPC functions i mean actually playing the media. I tought WHS didnt have any media player programs?
I dont really have a set budget, but it shouldt cost much more then 400/500 euro's unless its worth it.
cheers
