What's the best way to use a HTPC to play bluray quality/HD movies?

Streaming program like plex+phone app?
Directly connected via HDMI (or better??) and using I guess a wireless mouse/keyboard or console controller? Do I need a specific HDMI cable type?
Other option?

How do you folks do it through a HTPC for the best quality?

Dont run any compression on your media backups

plex server and client (tv or pc version) use direct play

direct to tv over network via dlna it will just play your original files off your media storage device

if on a backup usb hdd plug directly into tv

from your htpc via hdmi to tv

what is your current htpc os etc, as that influences 'controller' choice

Using win 10 at the moment. The 'HTPC' is currently her gaming PC.. eventually will move it all to an independent rig but it will need to be windows still as this will also run the streaming client for twitch. Which is fine as if we're streaming, we're not using it to watch things on.

Already have it set to direct play, so thats fine. Didnt think about using a USB drive actually, need to see what USB version my TV has, its a 4K tv so I imagine it wont be USB1.

Any other tips for Plex?

Personally I use Windows 10 with Kodi and a £20 1byone bluetooth media keyboard for £20.

HDMI from HTPC to AV amp then to TV. This configuration allows bit streaming of hd audio if that's relevant to your situation.

I haven't tried plex but I find Kodi brilliant as an HTPC front end. With a harmony remote you can set it up to do most things without ever having to touch your keyboard at all.
