just wondered how many of you use your htpc as a fileserver? I am asking because my htpc is running out of diskspace 20GB free out of 1.5TB.. I was thinking about getting a cheap HP microserver with 4bays but the problem is I would have to put that in another room and connect via homeplugs!

or

I could add another hdd or 2 to my htpc, it has plenty of space :-) 6x3.5" bays(silverton LC17)

cheers

I looked at those but...4 bays... a bit limiting tbh. I'm about to built a HTPC / Server / storage box all in one and it will just be using an older case with plenty of bays. Doesn't have to look good for me personally as will be hidden.

If you get something like an Antec Fusion, you can put more than enough drives in there to be a NAS when you consider 2Tb/3Tb drives. That's the route I'd go down personally rather than have another machine.

All of my devices (HTPC etc) are linked up via gigabit LAN to a server under my stairs! :)

I've got a 640GB hard drive in my HTPC is because I play games on it on my TV so need lots of storage for them.

If you have a few other PC's/devices needing to access the data then a centralised server/NAS is a good idea otherwise just increase the storage in your HTPC. :)
