What to do when you just need more space an cooling in an HTPC case.

background:
I use this case for my main computer, it gets used all day for work and then most evenings for play, so does get quite a pounding.
The machine contains the following kit...
  • Conroe E6700 OEM at 3.6Ghz
  • Asus P5W DH Deluxe Full ATX Motherboard
  • Seasonic 600W Full size ATX PSU
  • 2 x Raptor 150GB + 1 x 500GB Hitachi Hard Drives
  • 2 x Connect 3D 1900 XT X Cards in Xfire

The project aims:

  • [1]Improve general quiet cooling by adding 120mm Fan support
[2]Get some air on the 500GB Hard Drive because its too hot at 50c
[3]Make room for a better CPU cooler - target = Tuniq Tower 120
[4]Not to damage or modify any of the existing case - cos its too nice.

here is the case before the start of the project.

The Solution:
My plan is to make a new top for the case made of a mesh material which will enable air to get into the system. I need to raise the internal height of the case by 3 centimeters to accomodate the new cooler (assuming the documentation is correct as i dont have the cooler yet).

I made two prototypes of my idea out of cardboard. the first was very basic and had a few flaws (sorry did not take a pic of that). here is the secon prototype.

I found a supplier that sells a product called MeshX. This is steel with holes accross the surface. Its basically the same stuff that Lian-Li make their case fronts from. I wish i could find Aluminium but this is all i can find.

As luck would have it the MeshX comes in a 500mm x 500mm sheet and i need exactly 500mm width to give me the 30mm raise in height for the new heat sink.

Here is a shot of the work in progress.

Now the project is complete.

Not bad for 2 days work and a total cost of £15 :)

I have managed to create a mod that has not damaged the case in any way. I still have the old lid that can be put back on at any time :)

here are the results:

nice and simple mod, hope it gives you the cooling boost you need.

seeing as its such a nice BIG htpc case, would be nice to see some Watercooling in it ;)

Water might still be a problem as the pump etc would have to be above the components and in the event of any leak - bye bye rig :(

Is the mesh solid at all, or does it flex?

Mainly asking to see if you could put something on top of it.

As a sheet it flexes a little, but now that its got shape its quite rigid. You could place things on top, but they would have to be quite light. The mesh would dent quite easily.

Putting things in top defeats the point though as the more air flow the better :)
