Well i've been using Sky+ for a while, and i've been a bit ignorant of the HTPC market, but when i started researching it it seemed very lucrative. But i have a few questions:

  • What sort of channels would i be able to watch? There are a lot of things i like on Sky 1 and Sky 2, but i'm not sure if i would get those. Also, would i be able to get Virgin 1 and Dave? They are pretty much the only channels i watch.
  • Would i be able to plug my current Sky satelite into the TV Tuner cards? I've read about somebody doing this but i just wanted confimation.
  • Would it be possible for it to run Linux? Having a look around, Crunchbang seems perfect for this but i wanted to make sure beforehand that there was enough compatible software (and hardware) to make it work.
  • Would i need a graphics card? I'm not sure if i would go for an AMD chipset with integrated graphics or use a dedicated graphics card, and maybe an Atom CPU and passively cool it (with some of those 9dB case fans, obviously).
  • Could you put a build together for me please? No budget as of yet, but a very cheap one and a top of the range one would be good, then i could find a midpoint to suit my needs.

Thanks in advance :D

I'll let the HTPC experts answer the main questions but spec-wise, this should do...

Get Windows 7

I was considering running it completely passively, or with a few 9dB case fans, would it be possible to use an Atom? Can i get them on their own anyway? They all seem to be attached to the motherboards.

And i would only use Win7 for gaming, thanks to DX11. As is, i was hoping for it to be Linux compatible. As i said, Crunchbang looks perfect for this, but i want to make sure there's compatible software and hardware for it first.

Or i could somehow make it into my main PC... i'll wait for the 45W TDP Quad Cores :)

Does anybody have any other ideas? I'm kinda miffed about the TV Tuner cards...
