Your best friend in this scenario is usually height, if you can either move the router up higher or use external antennae’s situated up a height, you are more likely to see an improvement, but it depends on the local environment.
My post code doesn’t get 4g only 3G.
I could try getting power up into the loft but I’m sure when I tried the sim card out on the streets near my home it was still only connecting with 3G which is why I was thinking some better antennas might help me pick up a 4g signal.
A better external may help. I'm on the periphery of 5G and tried to utilise it but it was that weak I just gave up (returned the kit for a 30 day refund). I was just using a better internal aerial. It's a gamble though. If it doesn't work then it's money wasted. But I'd imagine if you desperately wanted to try then you'd need a good external aerial up on the roof or along the facia outside (as mentioned height is best to avoid obstacles etc). Then trial and error to try and get a good signal before finally fixing in place.
I recently asked Taoglas what external aerial they recommend (as I use one of their internal antenna and was curious what external they'd recommend) and they said this one - https://cdn2.taoglas.com/datasheets/MA741.B.BI.001.pdf - but that is roughly £150. I've also seen those directional aerials that look like TV aerials. Not sure how good they are.
The other seriously sensitive option is the Mikrotik LDG LTE which attaches to a spare slot on your satellite dish (if you have one) and the gain on that is phenomenal. We put one of those into a farm in deepest, darkest, Lincolnshire and the farm went from a 5Mbps 3G connection to a 55Mbps 4G signal and it was even easy to cable up.
