hub connection problem

Currently, I share the internet via my computer (modem connected by usb) through the onboard lan connected to a network hub. The rest of the people in my house then connect to the hub and receive the internet that way. I know it's not ideal, but it was working fine until recently.

The current problem seems to be that my computer is acquiring a private automatic ip address (I presume from the hub). IP address: 169.254.49.75, Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0. There's no longer a default gateway address. Previously, I have uninstalled the lan drivers then reinstalled and it has acquired the correct ip address without problem. This didn't work this time.

I have also tried ipconfig/release and renew and this didn't solve the problem (I get an error message from the command prompt: "an error occurred while renewing interface...contact your dhcp server"). Then it goes back to the
automatic private address). From searching the web, I have gained basic some insight into the problem but not how to fix it.

Anyone with a similar problem and suggestions of how to fix it?

P.S. My lan adapter is 3com Gigabit NIC and is integrated with the motherboard. I don't have a spare network card at the moment, so can't try that.

The hub won't be doing anything, certainly not giving out IP addresses.

Presumably you're using ICS - have you tried disabling and enabling it again?
