Right, i got a lettter from huddersfield uni saying;

"Having reviewed your application, I am pleased to be able to offer you a place for Spet 2007 and you will recieve formal notice through UCAS soon."

Is this an unconditional offer? no other mention about it in the letter, other than theres an open day I can attend if I want too..

Also, whats the uni/course like? I'll be going to the open day but wondered if anyone is doing the course in question, or attending hudders uni? :)

Anyway, UCAS in general, I log into the tracker thing quite abit, as I've had 3 of my 4 uni's contact me offering places, and the UCAS thing hasn't updated since 15 dec o6, a day after it had been processed.
Erm? :/

Help.

My ones from staffs/teeside go into more information though, interviews/portfolio work, explain the process more indepth.

Also
If your just going to troll, dont bother?

Have you done this specific course? How do you know where it takes you? Have you spoken to the lectures at uni and been guided through industry contacts who have ties with the uni to secure placements with students?

:/

I hate computer science though?

ok given it might not be "the best allround choice", but I'm not going to do something for the rest of my life that i REALLY dislike. I'll do something I love, even if it doesn't pay as much, or if its a bit harder to get into.

I'll be different, I'll be happy with what I do. Not like half the country these days.

Now, I don't care why its a **** course or whatever, I'm more interested in my original questions of ucas not updating and what the course is like to people who have first hand experience of it.

Games Design is very similar to 3D modelling and such, the course in Stafford Uni is based around Maya etc...

Yup, Staffs is my top choice atm, close to my life (family, girlfriend) and the course/people/place seem amazing :) I've got an interview bagged there so all's hoping.
In all honesty its the only uni i've really geared up. The others were just choices I picked that did the course similar (as few seem to offer a decent course in the field) and as backups.

@ Locrian, Thankyou.

@ ninja economist, If you are slagging huddersfield for a reason, TELL ME. It is what i originally asked for, whats the place like etc? If you seem so quick to judge it you obviously know some info on the place?

@ Conanius, quote.. (cba too) Theres lots to be said for doing a job you love, certainly prefer to earn 30k doing a job I love than 130k doing one I hate....

Bingo. :)

Nokkon, I'm neither. I hate programming, and Teeside want a hand drawn portfolio with NO computer work. (they said if not, they would enroll me for a different course, where I would be able to choise modules from game design anyway)
I can draw, but only on the offchance do something "good". I dropped as level art becuase, it was boring meaningless, had no life to it. Computer art, I can do. And games design /3d modelling etc is what i asked my college if they did when i joined.

The staffs game design course is pure 3dmodelling/animation and a bit of level design, and such like is the one at huddersfield. Both can cranch out (with a good portfolio) into 3d animation/film work...

It isn't just limited in that sense then? :/

edits, gah im tired!

and you for quoting it. Clever people.

Well, ibtl I spose.

Thanks to anyone who actually tried to help and not ruin the thread..

It was only 2 simple questions guys.

I said nothing about the Univ. what I said was about the course. If you enjoy it, right. That's great. But you're spending all that money as an investment for YOUR FUTURE. You WANT to get a job with your degree, and thus you want the best possible chance for a job with that degree.

You're obviously skilled, and that can go far without a specialist degree. Realistically, and I know that anyone else on this forum with a CS degree will agree with it - A broad background in computing will take you far, and the CS degree is the only ICT degree worth it's salt. Anything else is a dime a dozen.

You want to make yourself more employable, it's that simple.

You made a comment about huddersfield in relation to a grammer nazi/whatever earlier. I was just picking up on that...

Anyway, I simply don't care for a CS degree. Programming, I failed my AS year. I'm on track to fail my a2 year now. I just, dont click with it. Programming has finally just clicked in a broadened ICT gce course, which computing couldn't teach me.

The only "wider" options i have for game design (which as i said allows itself to be broadened later) is an art degree (nono) or a "multimedia" degree, which any 14 yr old in high school kid seems to be able to do just as easily.

wow, turn around thread.

Conanius @ didnt see that at all earlier :P I've been talking to a good few people at staffs, they all preach how good it is. My computing teacher mentioned a while ago staffs sucked, but they seemed to have turned about quite well.

Burned_Alive @ Will take this into consideration when I go up there, nice to know what I'm looking for :) Cheers

ninja economist @ staffs have good ties, Rare (dunoh if you know them, the did donkey kong! and now do motion sensing shiz) have moved everything they do to staffs uni. HUGE corp, may be more of a marketing scheme, hey... it worked ;)

Cheers gilly :)

afaik, from the open day talk i had a while ago, they have about 95% studets who do a sandwich year into a main corp for a year, and a further however many % of those get asked back by the company after the degree is over.

Conanius, I applied to portsmouth too ;) But again the game design. Purly on the prospectus quotes, a few people saying its a good course and needed and fallback choice.

gord, afaik they do 3d modelling from the basics, up to incorperating advanced maya animation, film level skill. (and I always say shiz, just not in a wanabee gansgsta' way)

Cheers pink :)

In regards to the drawing aspect, I can draw. BUT, I will only enjoy/draw something good when I want to, when i "feel" for the piece I am drawing. With As art, sat drawing a chair that had a bit of string on it for 8 weeks, was not my idea of art.
With the game design, its what I enjoy doing, enjoy sketching/drawing for. I can be busy doing revision or whatever, and doodle on the paper a weapon or character sketch, its just how I do "art". No way have I got the mindset to do a detailed hand drawn portfolio with no art education background to me.

And guess what, the woman at staffs said "You know what I've noticed? There is a lot of unseen potential out there because people are scared to apply to the course due to not being able to draw, but these people have been some of the best 3d modellers I have seen"

:)

And for the quiet little village life, that appeals to me more than anything :D (yes yes ok I'm a hermit.)

@ Concrete, everything you said "would be good to do", is part of the staffs game design course :)

They use a toolkit (hammer/ued) and complete it up with a complete game from spec through design to end product.

Also, im doing an "imedia" course at college, as an as. Which is basically a step below first year uni. (ie, im making a game in this course atm, but only one level/simplistic stuff) but still getting down storyboarding/game documentation.
