Hi All

I got my little boy a Hudl 2 for Christmas 2014, along with a case and screen protector. He has looked after it incredibly well and always been very careful with it.

Sadly, at the start of the year it started playing up a bit with charging and by March it wouldn't charge at all. I contacted Tesco and got it taken away from repair. Two weeks later it comes back and seems to be ok...for about two months, then once again it stops charging at all.

Tesco again took it for repair, after another two weeks, it comes back. I plugged it in and it seemed to be charging. got it all setup and updated and all seemed well. The following morning my little boy was playing with it and the screen suddenly had lines running from top to bottom over the whole screen and then it went blank. That was last sign of life!!

Tesco again took it for repair. It came back on Friday. I was away over the weekend so didn't get a chance to look at it until last night. It now won't charge when switched on, will slowly charge when powered down though with no charge light... However, there is a worse issue...the screen.

This is what it looks like when switched on:

All of those bubbles and smears that you can see are under the glass!! And none of them were present when the tablet was sent away. Clearly this is unacceptable and I'm really annoyed that it has come back in such condition.

Last night I tweeted Tesco about it as I was fuming and wanted to vent, they offered another repair of a partial refund (not sure how much it would be). I will be calling them later today to discuss it with them but I wanted to get the views and thoughts of some other people before I do so.

The outcome I want is a tablet which my little boy can use again as he's been without his tablet for most of the last three months, and I feel really bad about it as he has been incredibly careful with it the whole time as he was told when he got it that if it got broken there wouldn't be a replacement. He understood this and has been so good with it.

they've stopped making them now haven't they? only option is that it goes away for repair again in that case and hope they do a better job..

unless they'll accept a refund this far down the line? and get something else.

That's just it, I've rather lost faith in their abilities to repair, with them having created problems with the screen on one of their previous attempts. Really it's my only option but I'm not very happy about it.

They did offer, on twitter last night, a partial refund but whatever they offer isn't going to be enough to buy a replacement tablet.

Guess part of the problem is tesco don't own stock to replace it with and, not being something they make themselves, they basically have to just send it to some random Chinese factory and hope for the best.

My advice would be accept whatever refund you can get and invest in a cheap branded android (Samsung? Sony?) tablet or an iPad mini 2 or something. Mini 2 refurb can be found from the official store for ~£180 and I guess other brands will be similar .

Well, it's a uk based company that provides the techsupport and repairs but they're clearly not very good at it.

Thing is with a refund, the original tablet was only £90 so a partial refund will likely be, what maybe half that, if I'm lucky? I won't be able to source anything anywhere near as good for that sort of money...

Could be a result of exposure to humidity or the bonding agent hasn't dried (between screen & digitiser - I'm making an assumption it's a 2 part system rather than the more common all-in-one they do mostly now) but this is assuming it's your current one that was opened as it wasn't just a refurb - did you note the serials? Do they match? It's likely had its USB port replaced or similar when the real issue is power regulator (which requires mainboard replacement - harder to do on a device that's EoL).

You could try replacing the screen? I accidentally smashed my sons screen last week and quickly found that no tablet comes close to the specs of the Hudl2 for the price point. I ordered a replacement from Amazon for £35 and fitted it in 30 minutes following a You Tube video. I haven't done anything like this before and it wasn't too difficult and very satisfying to see it working again!

There are also guides on how to replace the charging jack and the battery (approx £13 on Amazon) and very each to change. Obviously this is all cost to you, but could be paid for with this partial refund?

Good luck!

I did make a note of the serial numbers when I first sent it off. Note checked it but I think it's the sae unit , the screen protector is as badly put on as it always has been! lol

I have a feeling that might be the problem, the usb port feels like it grips the cable better than it did but it's still not charging properly. It will only charge when it's powered off which is annoying.

I possibly could but I don't feel I should have to when it was perfect when I sent it off for the repairs and it's come back like this.

Just to update this.

After the Hudl2 went back for the fourth time, I received a replacement (despite having been told they didn't have any they could replace mine with) and all seemed fine..

Roll on just over 3 months and the replacement also stops charging. I called them on Monday and told them I had no faith in their ability to repair the tablet and wanted to know what they would be doing.

My details were passed on to the out of warranty team and I was told I would hear from them. Well today, they called and offered me £50 and I get to keep the tablet. Having got a second hand Nexus 7 2013 for my little boy, I'm happy to cut my losses with the Hudl and accept this. It's a shame because the Hudl2 is a great device when it's working fine but my little boy has been pretty much without a tablet since February through no fault of his own, so I'm happy he now has a working tablet and I'm not too much out of pocket.
