i've had a problem with my PSU for some time, it's turned off my pc many times and has been making an awfall hissing noise for ages, after yesterday's crash..... Win XP wont start at all today....just a blank screen

i've tried turning it on about 10 times and all i hear every time from the pc is, a series of 5 bleeping sounds in quick succession... nothing after this.....totally dead screen, it's never done this before.

i've tried unplugging it from the wall....everything

please help.

Buy a new PSU?

Or atleast try it with a different one to make sure its definitely the PSUs fault.

but what worries me is.....when the PSU has been faulty in the past, the screen has never been dead before, , this looks like a blown motherboard as well!....plus i've never heard these fast bleeps before at start up.

i cant test it, i have no spare PSU.... the PSU is still working.... i think, because the fans and the hardrive etc are starting up... then instantly, you hear a series of fast bleeps.....and nothing appearing on the screen!

Google 1 long 4 short bleeps or whatever you're getting. Most likely error combos will be the graphics card or your memory. Take all the memory out and fire it up, do you get the same bleeps? If so and you have 2 sticks of ram, try switching on with just one then the other. If one combo works and the other bleeps, one of the sticks of ram has died. If the bleeps are different then it's more likely the graphics card.

There's also a possibility the 12v rail on the PSU has failed, but i've never had it bleep when that's happened to me... fans spin up but no HD or anything. However, a dodgy PSU could have killed one of the other bits. You can get PSUs for as little as a tenner... they might not compare well against more expensive branded ones, but why keep using one that's making funny noises. Be greatful you've not burnt the house down yet

If your PSU is hissing and shutting down randomly, get a new one ASAP, preferably a decent make. If it hasn't killed your PC yet, it might well do in the future.

As for the not booting - would be good to know the spec of the PC?

OK its one long bleep and then 8 more....i've removed RAM/ GTX8900...turned it back on......one long loud noise.

repaced card and Ram.....IT'S WORKING :D:D: but with error message ``overclocking failed...data lost`` ...turned it off again

turned it back on.......booted strait into XP :D:D....PSU making high pitched wining and hissing.......

yesterday:- it totally switched itself off, no blue screen....just like a power cut....while playing Painkiller Overdose (15 MINS)...it's done this 20 times in two weeks, loosing XP/Steam files etc.

conclusion....DONT TOUCH IT AGAIN UNTIL THE PSU REPLACED :D:D that was a close shave, i'm very lucky indeed!

p.s Card was last overclocked about 6 months ago, so it cant be this....and the system runs cool

Definitely replace the PSU, the switch off sounds like overheat protection! When you've got the box open to replace the PSU, take off the CPU cooler, clean it and the CPU, apply new thermal paste (a very thin layer not a big splodge) and refit it. If you have access to a compressor, blow the system out to remove all the dust, but don't get the nozzle too close or you'll blow bits off the board :D

yes i was wondering if it was a combo between CPU overheating and a faulty PSU.....but the Nvida software sais 42c and 44c for the CPU..soon after playing CRYSIS ( seconds after) , so this seems ok, i'll replace PSU and paste and back off the Card's overclocking.... because it's right on the MAX limit...

i wont overclock again till i've got my new pc up and running, no need to, because this existing rig has to last another year.

when i game with it.... i sense it's weak and dropping vaults, it strains too much in heavy fights... then it switches off..... but when the card is faulty, it slows down and judders....you then see boxy pixels all over the screen and then it finally freezes.... because it's done this before on overstained/ faulty cards....or cards that i've OC too far :D

my guess is it's not overheating because when it does suddenly crash, i restart it instantly and it might not do it again all night. ... but it should if overheating..

it's got a faulty PSU...there's the high pitched noise... plus the sound of sparks/crackling when i plug it in etc....

when turned off, the sound continues for about 10 seconds, or sometimes continues if you leave the mains plugged in.

i'm just pleased that the mobo/card/CPU isn't bust......because i played VEGAS 2 just now for a minute and it was fine... i then lost by bottle and turned it off :D
