US scientists have found further evidence that huge seas existed long ago on Mars.
A geological mapping project found sedimentary deposits in a region called Hellas Planitia which suggest a large sea once stood there.

The 2,000 km-wide, 8km-deep Hellas basin is a giant impact crater - the largest such structure on Mars.

The researchers say their data support a lake between 4.5 and 3.5 billion years ago.

Some scientists believe that conditions on Mars were more favourable for the evolution of life at this time than they were on Earth.

Exciting find. :)

If mars had huge seas and they supported life then I would expect there to be fossils. THIS is what the next mars lander should be designed to look for tbh.

:)

Screw Mars, it's already widely believed that Mars was once like Earth and that Earth will likely one day be like Mars.

Saturn's moon Titan, however, is the new news of the day as it's believed that active life possibly exists due to Hydrogen consumption at the surface among other some missing expected other bits.

Researchers at the space agency believe they have discovered vital clues that appeared to indicate that primitive aliens could be living on the moon.

Data from Nasa's Cassini probe has analysed the complex chemistry on the surface of Titan, which experts say is the only moon around the planet to have a dense atmosphere.

Yeah, and years ago US scientists said there was no mavity on the moon, but when they got up there there were loads of rocks just laying around which would have fallen off years before if there wasn't any mavity! :)

What's to lol about? It's actually true...

It's been known about for many years for example.

I even read about this when I was in school, didn't you pay attention in Science?!

I'm guessing you're lolling because I quoted "alien life" which automatically /must/ mean green men with huge brains who abduct humans on worldly visits here!

*facepalm*

Which US scientists? What year?

Read this the other day, I think the reason it froze up (Mars) was that it's internal heat generator and magnetic fields switched off. Therefore its atmosphere got stripped away freezing the planet.

core froze killing the magnetic field which in turn allowed solar winds to strip away loose atoms/molecules due to the low mavity nature of mars. i believe they call it the hydrogen bleed effect but its been about 10 years since i finished with physics.

all planet cores eventually go cold time is proportional to mass.

eventually yes the same thing will happen to the earth.

I take it if we had the means to reheat the core by then this would never happen?
