I have to shout out a big respect for Hulk Hogan.
Obviously being an adult I knew that even though they are great athletes all the matches are fixed but it's hard to get kids to realise that (a bit like Santa).
Hulk was making a comeback and my kids + male cousins had got a Saturday morning kids program on where Hulk was in being asked questions by the kids.
One asked if they thought he could win WWF/WWE (or whatever) and he said that he will be winning it, all the story lines are planned out so he will win.
Me and my wife were gobsmacked and one of my nephews asked how they know he's going to win, it was Santa all over again and of course he went on to win.

I had loads of respect for during my childhood but then the videos emerged of him being racist and admitting he's a racist made me lose respect for him.

I only saw one video of him saying a race word during a WWE interview, was there more? Hogan was my teenage idol like most, he was the reason I got into WWF back in the day during the Savage/Zeus/Andre era. He and Warrior were a big inspiration to me and got me weight training, and studying nutrition in my teens. I know nothing of the man now but I'll always have respect for his work ethic back then.

I certainly look forward to seeing how this pans out.

Edit: Still don't forgive him for Suburban Commando.

I remember when I was a young teenager having an argument with another kid who swore blind that it wasn't scripted .

I've come across loads but the strangest was my mate Fudder who was a 2nd Dan in a martial art called Uechi Ryu, he did demo's all over the country and obviously knew the art of Kumite.
He used to go and watch the really tacky fixed wrestling featuring the likes of Giant Haystacks and he would swear it's real.

A work colleague who was also my best mate started to talk about the American wrestling after he started to watch it with his Grandson, it then got to a point where he was really excited to talk about it so I had to sit him down and basically tell him about it not being real.
He said "Do you think I'm stupid, of course it's not real but the story lines are brilliant"
Every now and then I get Facebook 'friends' posting wrestling stuff and I always wonder "Do they think it's real?" but I don't want to upset them.

Of course it's 'real', they are great athletes trained to perfection but they have already worked out how the fight will go.

Tbh it's not bad watching it for some of the female wrestlers :D.

My first taste of US-style wrestling was a Hulkamania tape at my friend's house when I was about 9 or 10. Must have been approx '91 or '92.

I remember my mate's big brother calling the Hulkster "old man Hogan", 'cause he did look old as ****. What makes me laugh now is that Hogan would have only been about 35-37 in those matches :D

I watched WCW on ITV for a couple of years (didn't have Sky for the WWF), but stopped in probably about 93 or 94. Basically watched no wrestling at all until a couple of years ago when AEW started. I watch almost every week and buy all their PPVs now :D

I'll be interested in this HH movie. They need to touch on how much of a self-serving ******* he was, and the racist stuff, along with the awesome side if they're going to give a proper representation.

I thought "The Wrestler" already was a Hulk biopic ... more or less. :D

:D

That was a great film!

Can't say I'm interested in this biopic at all, never watched American wrestling it always just seemed on the same level as a pantomime. I did have a gf back in day who was heavily into it though, pretty sure it was just because she liked the eye candy

I'm going to both agree with you (because most of it is) and disagree with you (because some of it isn't) here :D

A story is just starting to build to its conclusion in AEW right now that started almost two years ago, which has touched on friendship and the abuse that can occur within, the pressures of self-expectation, anxiety, loneliness, alcohol as an escape, the true meaning of friendship, and, hopefully, self-acceptance and redemption. There have been lots of suplexes and lariats too, of course!

It's been a real ride of highs and lows, filled with both levity and pathos, and even having to ride the real life death of a wrestler who was on the fringes of the story (Brodie Lee/Luke Harper who was due to play a role in things).

Here's a thread on it. It's ******* glorious;

Only just came across this. Look forward to it. I was also a Hulk Hogan fan growing up. Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior were my favourites.

Back then I did not know if it was real or not, but soon worked it out once secondary school started and we started using the internet to go on news and rumours websites in the 90’s. We did not care and it did not take away from the magic. It was all about the story lines and cool wrestling moves. Wrestlers like The Rock were awesome. So much Charisma.

Adults would be like you know it’s not real right? I would be like yeah and would say you know East Enders is not real right? But you still enjoy watching it? :p

To me wrestling went downhill at the turn of the century. Watched a few WrestleMania’s here and there since, but not even seen one of those in over a decade as I recall. The new wrestlers just are not interesting and the storylines are boring. I never understood the appeal in wrestlers like John Cena and even he is getting on now. You can’t see me (or whatever he says), right, because your so boring I turned off the tv :p:D

I remember some of my friends used to be obsessed with WWE and WWF wrestling, I always thought it looked completely fake.

That above video to me just looks like to 2 fat blokes bumping into each other on purpose.
Thing is, people felt like there was something wrong with it not being real. Why did it have to be real? That is something I never got. Just sounded like what someone who was not interested would say for fun.

Why do we watch other forms of entertainment? It ain't real either. Lol :D

Couldn’t agree more with TNA. Today’s wrestlers are just rank amateurs compared to the charismatic fighters of the past. Cena and Roman Reigns - absolute borefests to watch, especially the latter who seems to be getting beaten up everytime I pop round my fathers place as he still enjoys watching it. A drop of sweat from The Model Rick Martel has more charisma.

At the end of the day I just have to remind myself that the shows now just cater for a different audience and one which isn’t me.
