Project OverKill - My First Build

Well you may of seen me here and there in the forums asking a few questions. I have a gained very basic knowledge of what I require/need to complete my rig.

This will be my first ever PC build, so I suppose many questions will becoming from myself and will appreciate all the help you guys can give me.

Why throw myself into the deep end?
Well after having expierenced online gaming a few years back when Modern Warfare 1 came out my local video library built a section into the building for PC Gaming (I forget the franchaise) but for the few hours I played I loved it :D Now at uni, and needing a better spec pc for all the CAD I will be creating I decided to look into building my own PC.

As outlined above, it'll be used for general PC stuff, gaming and CAD Design as my current Dell Inspiron just dont cut it anymore.

So I start the build with a NZXT Black Phantom Case only received today

First impressions, seems very well made. Nice steel internal frame was expecting heavier but lighter than I thought. Nice to see it comes with a few fans but going to fill the extra spaces and possibly get some led light strips round the mesh vents.

So whats next?
I've been looking and searching at everything available too me, and have yet to decide exactly what I need. This is where a lot of you will come in, as frankly I still no have a clue

I'll be waiting until have my exams in January before I place my first big order will hopefully everything I need to complete it. But in the mean time will look out for good offers on monitors (I want 2 you see ;)) and other accessories.

So for now, thats me and will continue reading to enhance what I already know and see whats best for me.

Wished I waited for the case to be in stock, although I'm still quite happy with the white one. So much room on the inside, can't wait to see what this looks like.

So been thinking, I've still not fully decided what internal components I require. But have been thinking more what I can do with this case with it in front of me.

Going to be changing the stock blue leds in the fan control, on/off switch and the reset switch to red. Then will be order NZXT Red 200mm fans for the top and side, 2x CoolerMaster Sickleflow Red 120mm fans for the side then hope to source a 140mm Red LED fan for the front. Or I may just leave the stock one in and light it up with some NZXT sleeved lightning kits.

External peripherals, I've taken my fancy to two 27" Samsung HD LED Backlit Monitors seem to suit my needs perfectly. Logitech G Series Combo which included the G19 Keyboard, G9x Mouse and G13 Advanced Gameboard. As for sound I require both speakers and a headset so I dont disturb anyone late at night so may order a set of Turtle Beach PX3's and Logitech X-530's or Z506's

Now I really should look into components for it... so confused by it all though. So much to choose from but the daunting thing is I really dont know what I require to suit my needs.

Nice case choice :)

Why the change to the blue LED's ? personnel preference I am guessing, its a shame OC don't stock the other variants of the case.

I kinda like the blue LEDs on the Phantom

Heres mine:

What is your budget out of interest?

Yeah personal choice really, kinda prefer the whole red/black theme. I've looked at changing the leds and its a simple soldering job nothing too hard.

Budget, well at the minute I have about £1000 but for absolutly everything I reckon I could stretch to about £3000

Personally I don't have any complaints with any of the hardware I am running.

If your looking at CAD and stuff and it seems you have a decent budget. I would seriously recommend going with z68 and at least an I7 CPU + a decent bit of RAM. GFX card is up to you if yoiur not fussed about playing everything on max and just want to do gaming at a decent level a 560 Ti will more than do the job. (I love my 580 though)

Been on OcUK all night now looking at processors and motherboards. I'm not afraid to push the boat out on this a little so what would be best to work with the Intel Core i7 2700k 3.50Ghz

But this is where I am being awkward lol I fancy a red and black themed motherboard so out of these, I dont know what to get:

Your opinions/help please?

If your not buying till late Jan/ early Feb, Id wait for Ivy to either push prices down or give an alternative.

At the same time then, different mobos will come out and you never know what colours they'll be in.
Out of the mobo's you've stated though, the Fatal1ty z68 would be a good option with its gen 3 PCi ports.
