Ive just really hurt myself on the tricep pulldown. Im immensely strong on this exercise and max out the weight based on 3x8. I use it twice a week and for some reason on my 3rd set today I totally felt something in my back go. Its hard to describe, but I actually felt something stretch and feel like it snapped, centre of my back between my shoulder blades (no, not my spinal cord :D ). The analogy of cold chewing gum springs to mind. I was warmed up though, this was my last exercise for the day.

Its just now starting to ache/burn and I cant look up and have limited movement in my neck. Ive pulled muscles before, but this one felt bad. Im going to be hurting big time tomorrow and no doubt for the rest of the coming week :(

The last mishap I had on of of these was the rubber sheath splitting and it slipping out of my hand :D

Great for your triceps and back though, one of my fave routines.

If you've injured yourself go and see your doctor.

If you're "immensely strong" yet felt something in your back go you must have been doing it wrong anyway since you shouldn't be involving your back on a tricep exercise.

True.

I do feel however, that this particular exercise does workout your upper back, traps and primarily your tris as you push down. Unless of course I am somehow managing to get this exercise completely wrong. Theres not exactly much to get wrong though is there.

Feet together, stand straight, starting point is your arms at 90 degree to your body, pull down and then a final press down to flex those tris, then allow to rise back up so your arms are again at 90 degrees.

The wrong way would be to use it as so your ringing a church bell, allowing the triangle to rise above your shoulders and then pulling down.

Start / Finish Positions As Below (Minus the wonderful shorts);

(Ive drew on this one where I feel the exercise targets)

First thought, you are using too much weight, you shouldn't be overly using your back to stabilise yourself. If its working your traps then something isn't right :p

one more thing, its a pushdown ;)

Too much weight, too low initial reps, too straight standing position. Any of those could have caused it (or none, everyone can slip on form randomly and hurt themselves, even pros:))
No medical advice but I wouldn't be "overly" worried.

Cheers gents. Im not worried, just though I would share. I know I'll be hurting for at least a week.

As stupid as it sounds, I think its because my feet werent flat across the floor, my heels were resting slightly on a mat, I must have been on a slightly skewed angle.

Anyway, Im loaded up on Ibuprofen :rolleyes:

sounds like you where forcing the weight down with your upper back, saw a guy do something similar today in my gym (there are some posterboys for bad form in my gym..).
