Arite, I'm not in the best shape, I'm not fat or anythin I just not done as much exercise this year as I would normally do.

Anyway, I started runnin a couple of weeks ago and I was doing it in these nike tennis shoes I spose you'd call them that I've had for years, no grip, no support nothin. Wearing them there was obviously no shock impaction or anythin so it wasn't nice unless I was runnin on grass (which I could only do for like 2 minutes of the route I was goin).

What I noticed though right, its always been stamina that was the problem for me even when I was like 13 and blastin everyone out my way over 100m I could never feel comfortable runnin long distance. But now, even with a smokin habit when I went with my friend my breathing wasn't too bad after the first 5 minutes or so and I settled down and was pretty comfortable.

But my calves seize up, thats the problem. They just stiffen up really quickly I stretch out before I go and everything, walk a bit try and loosen them up but it can get to the point where I cant even flex my foot down. Anyway I bought some adidas running shoes that have big pads on the back thinkin that would help. Just been for a run now, it was much better, my calves didnt seize but my outstep on my left foot first, and eventually my right just started really hurting, like when you jump in a swimmin pool and land on the blade of your foot, not enough to break your ankle or anythin.

I sat down and took my shoe off and tried to rub it a bit better but I couldn't do it and ended up havin to come home, I was only like 10 minutes in, if that.

Anyway, sorry for the long story, I've read parts of teh running guide before but its too long to try and find answers to specific questions and that is more for serious runners who have a proper goal, I'm just doing this cos I need some sort of exercise. Thanks.

The best solution would have been to go to a shop that specialises in running shoes and get them properly fitted and your gait analysed (i.e. do you over or under-pronate etc) but try stretching before you run to see if that helps and temember that you're taxing your body in a way it is not used to so it might take a while to acclimatise. If the pain persists then it might be worth going to see your doctor though.

Have you thought about walking first I know it can be borring but it's the best way to start to get your muscles working again then you start to build it up to quicker walks then jog and so on.

1. You need to have a goal and want to do it, have neither of those you will be like one of those that joins the gym for a year and goes twice.

2. It hurts, its not meant to be comfortable, but with improvement in fitness and getting to know what you like and can/can't do it gets easier. Ive been running for 12+ years its never easy, if it was the entire population would be doing it.

Im not sure how old you are but if your in your 20s to 30s it shouldn't be difficult getting into it, just need to take it easy and gradually build yourself up.

Just need to realise that it isnt meant to be easy, you will feel lousy at the start, but after a few weeks you'll wonder how you lived without doing it.

I would try to get yourself to do a race maybe a 10k maybe plan it for 6 months ahead and work up to it, plenty of local races about up north.

And yes get some good running shoes, otherwise say bye-bye to your ankles, knees, hips, and back.
