HX1000i & mini ITX motherboard

I think i may have bought the wrong psu for my motherboard!
I wanted to upgrade my psu to handle a faster Graphics card
Ive bought an MSI Radeon R9 390X GAMING AMD Graphics Card 8GB
but here's the problem the Corsair HX1000i has 8 pin CPU connectors while my motherboard has only one 4 pin CPU connector!
any help would be greatly appreciated!

First off you did the right thing by buying a new psu as the CIT unit you currently have is garbage and only has 360w on the 12v rail. It's doubtful if it could even supply that much.

You have gone massively overboard with a 1000w unit though plus paid a premium for a Corsair branded unit (I say branded because they do not make their psu's). If you had asked first we would have saved you a lot of money and specced you a psu that is more suited to you such as the EVGA Supernova GS650w which is also 30mm shorter than the HX1000i and more suited to a itx case.

Anyway, you have it now so if you look at the 8 pin connector it should split into 2x 4 pin connectors and one of those will fit the socket on your motherboard.

Thank you very much i'll have a look at the connectors,just one thing are they all universal?
 
For an ITX case such as the Elite 120 you want to be going for ample power but in as small a package as possible, otherwise the PSU is going to either not fit or just be overkill and eat up tons of space.

For that build, i'd recommend either the Silverstone SFX range (ST45SF, ST45SF-G and SX600-G) or a shorter ATX PSU - admittedly i'm a little out of touch on these but I believe Superflower, Be Quiet and Seasonic are decent units.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

You are right the psu doesnt fit but i'll use it on another case,will the bequiet psu fit my case and what should the minimum power be as my new card says it requires 750w minimum and it needs a 6 pin and 8 pin power cable?
 
The BeQuiet SFX psu's won't do the job. They are budget models with weak 12v rails. Most of their bronze rated psu's are the same and the rest are vastly overpriced.

If you want a SFX psu then pretty much your only choice is the Silverstone Strider SFX 600w but at £105 you are paying a hell of a premium for it. Due to the smaller fan they can get noisey as well.

The EVGA GS 650w that I suggested in post #2 will fit. At 150mm long it's only 25mm longer than the Silverstone SFX unit and 30mm shorter than your Corsair.

Thanks for the reply but would any of these two manage to power my MSI Radeon R9 390X as it recomends a psu with a minimum power rate of 750w ?
 
If they couldn't power it then I wouldn't have recommended them. The 750w figure is to cover the people who buy crappy weak generic psu's. Go and check some 390x reviews and see the system power draws. A quality 550w psu is more than enough for most single gpu based systems these days.

as soon as i've saved enough i will go for the Evga.

Just to be devils advocate here but I have this sat happily in a CM 120 running a Windforce 670, 8Gb, i5 4430 blah blah.

The installed PSU there is 2cm longer than the HX1000i according to the store page, so should be fine. Just take your time and plan how and where you're going to put the cables.

Just to update why this PSu - this is my youngest's PC, it was meant to be a simple thing to play Minecraft and was going to be an A10-5800k and maybe some low powered gfx to crossfire with it and I had a couple of Silverstone SFX 300w lying around I was planning to use. Things didn't work out and I ended up putting a 7950 in and needed the bigger power supply so with it being Xmas I rebuilt with the Superflower I bought for my PC. The bracket that it locks into is standard with the case afaik.

You did an excellent job there!
Did you remove the internal fan as i have a Noctua 120 fan drawing air from the motherboard?
 
All of the fans and front panel connections that came with the case are plugged in and working, iirc its set up for in - out airflow from the front to the small side fan to pull the warm air away from the motherboard tray and supply it with fresh cooler air as there isn't a great deal of space around it, especially with one of these sat in there. Think theres about 5mm clearance under that PSU with that cooler, if the CPU starts having thermal issues I'll look at a thinner fan.

My cpu is cooled with a Akasa AK-CC7118HP01 K25 Low Profile CPU Cooler which i just replaced as the last one gave up the ghost and was spinning intermittently!

Sorry about the late reply what i meant by 'Universal' was the cables themself as they are a ribbon type & wanted to know if i can sourse braided cables to replace them?
 
No, you need specific cables for your psu. If you are sticking with the Corsair then OCUK sell Corsair and Cablemods kits for it. At around £70 they are not cheap. A cheaper alternative would be to buy braided cable extensions for the cables that can be seen. These just plug onto the ends of your current cables. I would normally post a link but this new store site is so bloody slow and keeps throwing up errors.
 
Also there isn't really the space to hide the existing cables and run extensions out in that CM 120 case. So I'd either go the Cablemods kit or make my own if it was important - although the proper crimping tools, materials etc to do a proper job would probably come in more expensive than the kits on sale.

Nah, i don't want to go down that root of rewiring cables etc!
I'll either make do with it or sell it on the bay.
anyways i'm not looking to put it in the cm 120 case i was thinking about getting the Corsair Obsidian 250D but i dont know if my Graphics card will fit in it as i know that it doesnt fir the cm120 as it sticks out the side a bit but it does have the length https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...ddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-288-ms.html
