6950 Issues, Enough Power?

Hi all,

Just a quick post before i go out and purchase a new power supply,

Havent had this computer built for a long time but it has never been very stable,

Its spec is as follows:

Asus P8Z68-V
Intel 2500K @ 3.7ghz using stupid turbo mode
Corsair 2x4GB Ram
Sapphire 6950 2GB
Crucial 64GB SSD
Creative X-Fi Soundcard
2 DVD Drives
Corsair HX520W

Now my question is could this low wattage power supply which is a few years old be causing all my problems, I get random BSOD's, crashes in Battlefield 3 & Bad Company 2. Tried loads of different things:

Running onboard audio and taking my sound card out
Fresh install of windows 7
Memtest (ran fine all night)
Upgraded all drivers and bios's for my motherboard etc.

And im still getting random crashes which makes me think 520w just isnt enough for this system,

About to nip out and buy a OCZ ZS 750W but wanted a second opinion before I do so,

Any advice will be great,

Thanks, Sam

The PSU should be sufficient unless faulty or it's deteriorated badly with age.

It could be a RAM problem.

Could you post a screenshot of the CPU-Z memory tab and confirm what voltage the RAM is running at in the BIOS?

See thats what I thought when building this system that the PSU should be okay but now I have my doubts!

Heres a screenshot of CPU-Z:

I have set my rams voltage manually to 1.7v in the bios but still no joy but it seems strange how memtest ran fine.

This is my ram only a few months old from OcUK:

It also might be worth saying that I have disabled turbo mode and set all clocks to stock.

As has been said your computer shouldn't be drawing anywhere near the stated let alone the maximum wattage of the psu so if it was the psu it must be faulty.

You have an overclock of some kind going. How stable is that? IBT for a decent length of time?

Have you tried running the computer after setting the BIOS to default settings?

Tried running on default bios settings which enables asus turbo mode and I still had problems so I now have my cpu running at stock speed.

Try turning your RAM voltage down to 1.5V.

You may not think that makes sense but see this thread.

Also your RAM is only running at 1333MHz.

Turn down the voltage first and if everything is stable then try upping the speed in the BIOS to 1600MHz.

You may also want to set the Command Rate to 2T (or 2N) for stability.

Definitely going to give this a try, thanks!

Just waiting for my Battlefield 3 to repair itself, not that it will make any difference

Set my voltage to 1.5v as you said and my command rate to 2T along with following a guide here:
http://www.overclock.net/intel-motherboards/1012874-official-asus-p8p67-p8z68-p8z68-gen3.html

This showed me the recommend settings for my motherboard and how to get a good manual overclock rather than using auto turbo mode which I cant stand.

Spent a good half an hour reading that and I have a better understanding now of the settings in the bios so I have changed a load of things and it seems more stable.

Going to have a game on Battlefield 3 now as this seems the ultimate stress tester.

Thanks so far and I will report back but I recommend anyone with the Asus P8Z68-V or P8P67-V who wants a nice stable rig to check out the link above.

Just a quick update to say my system seems stable now,

Never known a bios so complicated though, far too many settings!
