We currently have an old panasonic tda system, its good not great.

We are looking to change to a new system as we would like some more features, forwarding to mobiles, voicemail, recording calls etc.

My supplier has proposed an Asterisk system running on a Dell server. Cost is around £700 for the server and £700 for installation etc. I have some snom handsets that I can use,

Are these systems any good? Reliable?

We have 2 isdn2 channels coming in, I don't want a completely hosted PBX solution as out internet connectivity is poor due to our limited budget and our location.

Does anyone have experiences?

DO NOT USE Asterisk its open source and we as an IT supplier did supply these as a cheap solution but dont any more as they can get hacked and end u with a a very big bill very quickly only consider it if! 1. it will not be on the internet. 2. its a bit buggy
i would highly recommend 3cx install it over windows very user friendly and does everything you want specialy if you use the myphone app that you can install on a pc. also has a tunnel (vpn ) app to use on iphone and android to have an extension on your mobile.

Asterisk is only insecure if you don't know what you're doing with it. Secure it properly (ie. strong passwords, accessible via VPN externally only, etc...) - this is the same with any software PBX, even 3CX. And to say it's buggy is utter tosh, we have been running Asterisk internally using OpenVox BRI (using DAHDI rather than mISDN) cards and it's given us flawless service over 3 years. Not to mention the countless other PBX system vendors who use Asterisk as their base.

If you have any questions regarding Asterisk OP, don't hesitate to ask. I'll do my best to answer them.

Ran Asterisk with 30-50 phones, it ran mostly without problems and we was happy with it. Our issues related more to the card that was used and who we got our ISDN off.

Very happy with it the four years I used it, also to say its insecure is just false. Any server is insecure until you actually secure it. It's had its share of bugs but by this point its very stable.

Like most of the previous posters have said, Asterisk is fine and if implemented properly will serve an SME very well. I've worked around it in two businesses now (one a fairly sophisticated but small contact centre) and I would always consider it an option in the future. A good integrator/reseller is essential in my opinion.
