Hynix vs Samsung 980 ti memory???

During my research towards purchasing a 980 ti, I was at one point looking at purchasing the 980 ti Kingpin. One of its selling features was that it uses Samsung memory instead of Hynix. According to the forums (pinch of salt taken as no evidence except for clock speeds given) the positives of this memory are:

Overclock higher (proven to some degree with results)
Accept added voltage with less risk???
Clock for clock offer greater performance???
Has added error checking???

I have already purchased an alternative brand which I am very happy with, but are is there any truth to these forum rumours or not? And are there any other 980 ti cards that use Samsung memory?

Thank you for any help

If you are big into benching, Samsung will make a difference and give those extra few points but from a gaming perspective, it isn't something I would worry about.

Depends on the silicon lottery of the chips too, my 290X Lightning's Samsung chips will do 1700 comfortably.

How do you find out what memory your card uses? Reviews I've read of the msi I have don't mention what the ram is.

GPU-Z should tell you like so:

I take it guys you can end up with different memory even on cards from the same vendor? Eg, say i bought another msi ge 980ti. Possible that it would have different ram from my current card. Tbh it's not something ive looked into much.

It depends on the brand, Like most top end cards like the MSI Lightning and Kingpin cards will almost always use Samsung as where most other cards will use Hynix. If you are unlucky you'll get Elpida which are terrible clocking chips.

I know it's just the GTX 970, but when they was released the MSI Gaming Editions came with Samsung, but I've read in various forums that recent batches have come with Elpida, same goes for MSI GTX 980 Gaming Editions.

I guess it's down to what they can source easily at the time. I would be pretty miffed if a 980 ti came with Elpida.

As you suggest its probably down to production runs later in the life of that card run

When a specific card is brand new, you are more likely to get decent memory - the longer you wait the less this is important (and the cheaper the brand /AIB want to make it, ie the cheapest the memory is available the better)
