Hello everyone :)

About 4 or 5 months ago I rebuilt my PC which included replacing the thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5) and I used the rice method.

Before the rebuild the max temp. I got was around 75 to 80 degrees C. It was a bit too hot for my liking which was why I replaced the paste. Now it's had plenty of time and I just tried overclocking a little (to 4.2GHz, voltage offset is on +0v and voltage according to CPU-Z was around 1.240v) and the processor was hitting between 85-90 degrees C on IBT Max. I promptly stopped the test as I'm not comfortable with this.

Is it possible that I applied too much paste? Also, with the original build I spread the AS5 using my finger with a plastic bag on to get an even thin layer.

I followed advice of everyone and used the rice method but personally I think AS5 is too thick for the rice method? Obviously many have success with this method but I'm just eliminating my options.

Cheers in advance,
Cam.

spread it again like you did the first time,i always do it that way then you know 100% that the whole surface is covered

then see what temps are like

Ok I'll try that and give my PC a nice re-cable and report back.

By the way, with only enhanced turbo enabled and the OC taken off the temps were about 80-83 degrees C so definitely something not right

I run about 1.35v with 4.3ghz and get to about 95c under stress test so it is a little high, I still have stock fan on the evo and used AS5 with it iirc.

Ooh ok. Well I might leave it for a bit as I might ask for a AIO cooler for christmas so.. you never know ;)

EDIT: Or I might just upgrade the 212 and get push/pull SP120's

Unless you really want to go silly with the overclock I would just keep the evo, for the price it costs it has more than enough performance and I wouldn't want to take the voltage any further than 1.4v tbh.

To be honest, my motherboard is pretty restrictive overclocking-wise so I'm gonna get push pull SP's to try and maximise performance a bit :)

Hey again,

I've just replaced the thermal paste with AS5 and spread it with my finger. First run hit 92 degrees. I promptly stopped. Restored defaults in bios and left turbo enabled. Now the hottest it gets is 84 degrees.

Obviously this is brand new paste so I assume the temps may drop a degree or 2 but I'm happier now as long as it doesn't go above 85/90 degrees.

Thanks for your help guys, I appreciate it.
