Hyper 212 Evo odd temps

Hi

I just started overclocking my 2600k with my newly installed Hyper 212 Evo. I barely manage to get stable at 4.2ghz and I already have run into many problems. Well the most serious at this moment is my temps with this new aftermarket cooler. Currently I am stable at 4.2ghz with vcore set to 1.33 in BIOS. Now when I run Intel burn test at maximum stress level cpu-z shows 1.24 vcore after vdroop the temps get as high as 63C, 70C,74C,71C. I have already tried re-applying the thermal compound that came with the cooler using the line method. Then I also made sure I covered the very tiny gaps between the heat pipes. And last but not least I mounted another 2nd fan (gentle typhoon 1450RPM) in push-pull configuration. So my questions are:

1. Why am I getting high temps? I read other people get max 60C at 4.5 ghz and 1. 35vcore with this cooler.
2. What's up with odd core temp that is 10C cooler than others?

Could I have applied to much thermal grease? Though I'm not aware of how much is too much.

Thanks in advance!

The temps are a bit high for that voltage but it could be just that your cpu runs hotter. The difference in the core temps is normal though.

I had a coolermaster tx3 and with 1.33v on a 2500k it reached 72 degrees max with intel burn tst.

I noticed the first time I installed it that the thermal paste didn't cover the entire cpu as it was filling inside the gaps of the heatpipes. It didn't make a difference though, as the next time I put more on and temps were the same but when I took it off cpu was covered fully.

what case do you have it fitted in (e.g. how many case fans)? and what graphics card?

could just be that your in case temps are slightly higher than some other peoples
(what ambient temp too - if the other people you are comparing against tested in cold weather or 20C aircon and you are testing in 22-25C current outside weather then you will be a few degrees warmer anyway)

a spread of temps is normal across cores though

if you are going to do push-pull you are better off using exactly the same fan model on push and pull otherwise they end up fighting each other and the slower of the 2 just ends up being a restriction to the other

The airflow in my case is extremely good. The case is huge, a lot of fans and the cable management is neat. My room is at 18C.

Do you mean that odd core 10C cooler than others is normal?

yeah, the temp sensors on intel chips are not all that accurate anyway and having 1 "cool" core is pretty normal - keeping the hottest one under control is normally seen as the safest way to look at it

your temps do seem on the high side of desirable for a relatively modest overclock - if you did want to push it further then I'd consider a different heatsink

But Hyper 212 is one of the best air coolers (one of the best no THE best) and it seems like its only me who's getting such high temps at such low vcore. What could be wrong?

I have a Hyper 212 plus....I can tell you what is wrong... It's cack!

I have a AMD 960T which it cools fine up to 4ghz..However unlock it to 6 cores and this cooler has one hell of a time trying to deal with the temps.

Wack a H80 or a Thermalright Silver Arrow on there and laugh your a** off at your better temps

Never really understood the logic of spending £80+ on processor cooling, you could just spend the extra money on a better CPU and not overclock as much.

The Hyper 212 is a fine nicely priced bit of kit. As suggested earlier the case could be the problem, a huge case with lots of fans doesn't guarantee a good airflow, in fact it could inhibit it.

I suggest you remove the thermal paste, reapply and reseat the CPU and heatsink then see how you're doing.

Wow, just a couple of min ago reapplied newly bought Arctic Silver 5 , and the load temps went from 67 to as high as 80C. And heres how much I applied.

Ok its getting pretty annoying, I reapplied the paste again only on the heatsink, getting the same temps up to 80C
I guess Arctic Silver 5 is a VERY crappy thermal paste. What is wrong with it?
Cooler Master could keep my cpu at max 67C.

Update, I removed the heatsink to check out whats the problem with high temps, and I discovered something nasty. The reason why Im not getting lower temps is that the heatsink doesn't touch the center of the cpu. Heres What im talkin about

So I reapplied and put more paste and now my temps dropped to almost where I previously was, now instead of 67C at 4.0 ghz I reach 70C at 4.0ghz, so there you go the 2-3 difference between the thermal compounds. So now that we know whats the problem, how do I fix it? Its still too hot for a 4ghz overclock. Btw I also tightened the screws on the bracket and back plate tighter till I couldn't turn anymore. Its pretty much as thigh as it can get. Oh I also use 99.7% alcohol to thoroughly clean everything that has touched the paste.
this is new application
