Hyperlink to Excel

Can anyone tell me how i can open a .xls file in Excel as opposed to IE when linking through a company Intranet?

Can you not browse the page linking to the .xls on the intranet and right-click "Save as..." and then open it within MS Excel?

...or open excel, and get the url or the file on the intranet and paste it into the open dialogue box.

No, users want to open the file directly to excel from a hyperlink instead of through IE. Not save it everytime.

From Here

1. Start Windows Explorer (Start, Run, Explorer).
2. From the Tools menu, select Folder Options.
3. Select the File Types tab.
4. Select the file type that you don't want to open in IE and click Advanced.
5. Clear the "Browse in same window" check box and click OK.
6. Close the Folder Options dialog box.

Is the intranet based on SharePoint?

Yes it is based on sharepoint. Thanks for the info Jonny but that will only change it for 1 users pc at a time.
