Hi chaps,

Sorry, but this is another 'should I upgrade' thread.

Basically, I want to know if it is worth upgrading my i5 2500k to a 2600k/2700k/3770k?

The cost is comparatively small, but I am wondering if it still worth it.

Now, I know that this question has been asked before, but I was looking for a more specific answer based on the games I play.

So, what I want to know is if it is worth the upgrade for these specific games (as examples of the games I play):

Witcher 3
Deus Ex Mankind Divided
Elite Dangerous
Fallout 4
WoW

As for the rest of my spec, I game at 2560 x 1600 with a pair of 780ti's.

Thanks.

Thanks all.

Seems it would be worthwhile then.

As for cost, after I sell mine, it would work out to less than £100.

I really want a 3770k, but they are hard to come by these days. I will keep my eye on the MM and the bay.

Thanks all.

Well, it would probably work out to about £70-80 in the end.

Considering all the extra benefits mentioned here, as well as the pure speed, I don't think that is a big price to pay.

Also, when I do eventually upgrade, I plan to give my current system to the missus, so it is a more long term investment too.

Now, I don't suppose anyone has a 3770k I can buy? :)

Sorry, forgot to mention that it is currently running at 4.2Ghz.

So, since I plan to also overclock anything I get, I suppose the performance increase will be comparable.

Setter, yeah, that is why I asked about the specific games. Although you make a good point about the graphics cards. Perhaps more performance from them can be had with the newer CPU as well.

Well, you guys are basically in agreement, so it is just a case of finding one now.

Thanks for the help.

To be honest, I went for a safe overclock and might be able to get a little more out of it. Don't think it will make much performance difference though.

Rroff: I generally don't use V-Sync, so the more frames the better :) Yeah, I think the general conclusion is that it certainly won't do any harm, and I will see reasonable improves in certain situations.

So, all that is left is for me to find one for sale and see how good it is for myself :)

Thanks chaps.

Well, I was bored so I did a little test with Witcher 3.

Here is a rough approximation of the result:

As you can see, the CPU is working very hard. It peaked at 96%.

Although I think it was my 780Ti's that really struggled. Both hit 100% usage at some points. The GPU memory usage seemed ok with 2.7GB's used, although I am not sure if that is just a cap of the total 3GB total? If so, then that is maxed too.

I am beginning to think that more than just a CPU upgrade is going to be needed.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Here is what all my cores are doing:

That is just hanging around the city. As you can see, it is all the cores that are being used heavily.

I did consider the 4770k, but the primary reason for not doing it is the cost. No doubt the 4770k would be a nice boost, but apart from the cost of the cpu, I would be looking at a new motherboard as well. This would push the price up considerably against just getting a 3770k.

So my hope was that, specifically for the games I am currently playing, having the extra cores the i7's provide would prove useful.

Now, based on what was said on this thread, for the cost of the 3770k - minus what I can get for my 2500k - it would make a cheap and reasonably effective upgrade.

Thanks chaps.

I wouldn't upgrade to Haswell or Devils Canyon for the reasons stated. Like I said in the OP, I am looking at a cheap upgrade.

The idea is to use the machine until perhaps Skylake-E or Cannonlake assuming they offer a reasonable performance boost.

Disco, obviously I am interested in your tests with the 2600k, so please let me know how it goes.

I do get a bit of stutter, but then my graphics cards are pretty much maxed as well.

Anyway, the point is, since my cpu is working so hard, I was wondering if the extra cores the hyperthreading allows would make running Witcher easier.

Chaps, I picked up a 3770k in the end, but something odd is happening. When I run Prime95, I see this:

You guys have any idea what is going on?

Thanks.

I think so.

I am running 3603, which seems to be the latest one available for my Asus P8Z68-V Pro.

Yeah, I can't imagine it running long at that temp :)
