Right, before you lot gasp out loud and smile like evil villains ready to slate this thread into the ground. Read.

Almost a month ago I went to see a hypnotherapist to help me quit smoking. I had made a few feeble attempts before hand, but never had the will power due to my active lifestyle which always warranted for a smoke. Or so I thought.

I started smoking since my 16th birthday, I'm now 24, so that's almost 9 years of solid smoking (birthday is in February). I found my self out of breathe, unhealthy, stinky, bad breathe and in general just not looking 'fresh'.

A friend of mine, who is a cage fighter and beyond strong minded told me that he stopped a year ago via this hypnotherapist, I called BS but he insisted I try it.

At first I wasn't sure, the price... £220! A one off 2 hour session. This is a lot of money for something that 'might' work. Sod it I said! Lets try it.

I booked my appointment, along I went, a hour was spent talking about my habits, daily schedule, when and where I smoke, about me, about hypnotherapy and how it works. Basically a nice chat. The second hour, apparently was a hour of me being 'under'.

Now, let me make this crystal clear, you are able to get up at any point and walk out, you are totally conscious. The only way I can describe what its like is what she described to me. When you walk/drive somewhere and arrive without realising you just traveled.

This is your sub conscious opening up, also like when you drift when someone talks to you.

When she started, I followed her instructions, telling my self to relax but also clinging onto every word she said to see if I could spot this witchcraft. But no, pretty straight forward "you are not a smoker bla bla". I was totally relaxed though, couldn't even be bothered to scratch my nose! Which she said is perfectly fine.

When she 'woke me up' by counting from 10. I arose on time, she asked how I felt, I said no different just very relaxed and chilled and couldn't stop smiling. Now I will be honest, when 'under' I listened to every word, but I cannot for the life of me recall most of it.

She asked "how long did you think you was under for?"
I replied "maybe 10-15 mins?"
She laughed, "no dear, 70 minutes"

Anyway, paid my pennies owed, wished her a good night and off I went, knowing I would never have to see her again. Got into the car with my friend who was driving and also a smoker, she didn't light up. We pulled up at traffic lights and I saw a guy smoking in his car. First thing that went through my mind "Why is he doing that?".

Then my friend said to me "well? Has it worked? How do you feel?". I couldn't explain it, I was still me, but I couldn't understand why I would have a craving for such a thing, let alone a habit of doing it.

Anyway, 4 weeks down the line, a few nights out surrounded by smokers and still find it odd that I smoked and can never see a reason why I would want one... Obviously, it's normally the main topic down the pub as I'm sat in the garden with friends who have known me for years and are still a little shocked that I have gone without a single smoke after 4 pints (used to be 2 smokes to ever pint!!!).

Best £220 I ever spent.

tl:dr - Hypnotherapy worked for me, I no longer smoke.

Hypnosis can be a great tool for many areas.

I've used it on others for smoking, phobia's and general behavior modification, this was many years ago now and haven't done it in a long time, if that's the going rate I may have to start it up again :p

Always an area that interested me growing up, and there's a lot of research regarding healing and pain relief which is fascinating.

Yep, the lady mentioned many other areas that she does, anxiety, sleep problems and all sorts!

It only works if you want it to like any placebo so good luck.
Just remember though, nicotine is one of the most addictive substances and I've known people who have quit for 20+ years suddenly smoking again.

I think it's more than placebo if I'm honest, actually think there is a rather high level of science behind it.

And her explaining of it in scientific ways made perfect sense into how it can work.

I have no craving for nicotine thankfully :) When I say I don't even think about it, I mean it haha.

Well i understand that people find it helpful, i find it odd that in one session you just quit cold turkey, but hey who am i to comment :D

Congratulations and keep it up :D

I'm pretty skeptical of most stuff but I've listened to a couple of CDs from Paul McKenna and though they probably don't have the same effect as a personalised session like you had I did notice a difference. Annoying really as I would have liked to be able to poo poo it but I can't.

I was skeptical, and very odd. I still find it odd that I smoked which makes it even more strange!

And thanks.

Right, I'm doing this.

Gonna book it this afternoon and report back.

Always been sceptical about hypnosis but do actually want to quit so it will be interesting all round.

hypnotherapy is much more than just a placebo. the human brain is very powerful but also very suggestible. the subconscious is very susceptible to things. without it advertising and religion wouldnt exist.

i think i might have a punt after xmas when i try to quit.
