hz vs resolution for gaming - hz wins

I've been on a bit of a monitor saga recently. 1080p 60hz to 1080p 144hz to 1440p 144hz to 2560*1024 21:9 75hz and 3440*1440 21:9 60hz, and have come to the conclusion that, for me at least, hz comfortably trumps resolution in gaming. Not just gameplay wise, but also visually. Obviously it's nice to have both, but budget and conscience can get in the way of that :p

As much as gsync and freesync improve the image at lower rates, to my eyes, things still don't look good at 40-50 fps. Better than without, sure, but not great. 1080p at 75fps looks a whole load better than 1440p at 50fps, for example. Even the jump from 60hz to 75hz is enough for me to prefer a hit in native resolution to maintain. One day we'll all be running 4k+ screens at 500fps, no doubt, but until that point, what's your priority? I'm personally hoping for a decent 2560*1080p 21:9 at 200hz in the semi near future.

I agree about resolution not being as important as manufacturers make out. I can honestly say I have never once wished that my 1200p 24" screen had smaller pixels. I don't care if there are jagged edges, because no game has ever looked 'realistic' to me anyway.

I haven't tried gsync myself, but I would like to. Suspect I'd be quite happy with 40 fps if it was really 40hz, and not bouncing from 20 to 30 to 60.

Personally, I'd love a good, 32" IPS QHD with gsync. They don't exist and I refuse to buy another VA panel, so I'm considering getting an older 30" IPS for a couple of years until the 4k thing either goes away, or doesn't require enthusiast grade hardware to power it.

Each to their own.

I went from a 2560x1440 60hz monitor to a 3440 x 1440 100hz G-sync monitor and I notice the image quality and G-sync a lot more than the 100hz.

Are you to getting the benefit of 100hz in most games? If you're averaging 60fps, for example, then it's hard to compare the benefits.
