Pulled out of car park yesterday and got whine from engine - had a look today and noticed belt tensioner oscillating around so took it to garage.

Mechanic looked at it and said the tensioner is spring loaded and will move but can you smell the burning - He recons alternator is on way out so left it there and they gave me a lift home.

This is all my xmas booze and food gone up spout --Focus 2.0 TDCI :(

surely its cheaper to source a used part and fit yourself.
i did it and got one off ebay for £10.

As car parts that need replacing go it's not the most expensive repair you could be stuck with.

My alternator went on me. £15 later, from a reconditioned spare parts place, and 15mins later I had a working car again.
