Howzit guys,

I think I am missing something here...looking at my CPU's specs on AMD's site and else where, it states that my AMD A64 3400+ should be running at 2.2Ghz..I think.

However it runs at 2.4Ghz and has always done so in all my systems I've had it in. I am getting a 3700+ but this they say runs at 2.4Ghz... so then there'd be no point in going to the 3700+ then?

So what are the difference between 3200+, 3400+, 3500+, 3700+ socket 754 cpus?

If i remember correctly the 2.4Ghz 3400+'s were Newcastles and only had 512kb cache. The 2.2Ghz 3400+'s are clawhammers and had 1Mb cache.

Correct. I had a 2.2ghz 3400+ for the simple reason that you can overclock to get the extra 200mhz but you can't add the extra L2 cache. The 2.4 newcastle is a better clocker as well.

The 3700+ runs at 2.4 ghz and has 1MB L2 cache, hence the 3700+ rating. The extra 512kb of L2 is worth about 200mhz in clock speed. I had a 3700+ and could get it up to 2.8ghz. It all depends on the motherboard. Mine was an Epox 8NPA-sli. Yes sli on 754!! It had identical performance to a 939 sli rig. I know because that was my next step up with the same memory and graphics cards and a 4000+ clocked at the same speed.

Hi Emlyn. No sold it all on the bay and made a huge profit. :D :D

£140 for the 3700+ Got given it for upgrading a neighbours 754 rig to 939.
£95 for the 3400+ Cost me £75
£89 for the Epox mobo Cost me £66
£63 for a MSI K8N Neo Platinum Cost me £43.99
£54 for a Thermalright SI-120   Cost me £21. I almost felt guilty to take the guys money. Only for a second though. Postage was on top of those prices again. That lot almost paid for this new rig.

754 was the most underrated socket ever. As soon as 939 appeared, 754 prices plummeted. I got my friend an Epox 754 board and a 3700 Clawhammer. It was about £50 less than the equivalent 939 parts and performed identically.

And now it has incredible resale value! :)
